Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
My friend is a vet tech and heavily involved in pit bull rescue. One of her dogs is a universal blood donor (meaning that his blood type is a good match for all dogs). For the second time now, he was called into service when a bull dog was hit by a car this morning and required emergency surgery. What a giving thing to do. Has anyone ever considered this? From what she tells me the blood test to determine blood type is free but you must live close to the vet facility as you are called into action at a moments notice. Oden is a big calm guy and his "dad" held his paw while the blood flowed with no dramatics. Oden was given fluids and remained at the vets for two hours to recover. He is now home and his "sister" Rosie is having a sympathy nap with him. Oden is the big guy on the right.
P.S. she said the team at the vet clinic treated him like a Celebrity!

I love this story. My son has a Pit Bull, a much maligned breed that are some of the sweetest dogs I have ever met. Wouldn't it be ironic if a Pitty saved the life of someone's dog who thinks they should all be banned? Thanks for posting this.
Well actually they are banned in our province! The ones that my friend has rescued and kept as her own pets are grandfathered in due to their age. She has been fighting the good fight. Currently any illegal one that she rescues have to be transported (like a doodle train) to a neighbouring province. Gavin and Oden are good buddies; he is a gentle goofball much like Gavin.
Oden is a hero in my book!
P.P.S. The dog that was hit remains in critical condition but has improved. Please keep a good thought for her.
This is incredible. I hadn't even given something like this any thought but I, myself, am a regular blood donor. Thanks for posting. I live really close to an emergency 24 hour vet. It's definitely something to consider.
Yay Oden! What a hero!
I think this is great. The Specialty Hospital where Guinness was admitted when he had the Pancreatitis also runs a blood bank that provides donor blood to other Vet clinics. I think it's a really great thing for anyone who has a real calm dog who wouldn't be bothered by it.
Wow! What a wonderful thing to do.
This story is wonderful and I did not even realize you could do that with dogs. We have an ER Pet facility right around the corner from us, I am going check this out. The picture of Oden sleeping with Rosie is precious. Love the pictures:)
Oden rocks! I think Trav is too close to the lowest weight for donor dogs for me to be comfortable with his being a donor, but your friend is a real hero, as is Oden!
With sadness I report that the bull dog did not make it :(
