Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I wasn't planning on any real shaving or cutting of fur until Holmes gets his adult coat in, at least that's what I was thinking. But with Spring arriving and we've already hit 90 degrees, I'm rethinking my plan. Holmes is 11 weeks old and is panting in his black fur coat :) His coat is pretty short already so I wonder if a trim would even help? Is it too soon? When did you give your pup their first cut?
Here's a pic of him:

Holmes is adorable :) I had my labradoodle groomed with a trim at 6 months and his first real cut at 9 months, his hair was 5 inches long and it was cut to an inch. He just had his second cut yesterday and will be a year next week. he rarely gets a matt and after the adult coat comes in I will keep his hair long. If it was me I would just trim the eyes, feet and around his butt.
Stupid question: around his feet? Tops? Bor bottoms? Around his booty isn't needed- yet. I've trimmed around eyes already and inside ears. Mojo is a cutie I'm always checking out all the other black doodles :)ways attracted to other black doodles!
Mojo is chocolate but looks black in some photos lol
A shorter coat doesn't keep a dog cooler, and in many cases, it can actually make them warmer. Here's a recent discussion about this with some good info: http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/doodlegrooming/forum/topics/do-i-...
Thanks Karen-- answered my question right on with that link to WebMD article. I feel like smacking my forehead and saying "Duh!" dogs don't sweat like we do! :) Ah well... always learning!
This coat is protecting him from the heat. He won't need a cut until between 7 and 11 months old.
Thanks :) I will wait!
We took Dawson to the groomers for the first time at 10 months. Due to our little Mya using his legs as a teething object and his coat blow, his legs looked like twigs compared to his bear like upper torso. So we took him to be evened out. The groomer just evened out his leg coat and took the rest down to about 1 - 1 1/2'. We were pleasantly surprised to find that under that straight wooly coat was..... waves and curls!
I wouldn't be too worried Holmes's panting. Dawson was about his age last summer, and the last thing he wanted to do on a hot day was go outside. He would go outside, do his business, rush back in, and lay in front of the of the a/c registers, or on a cold floor near one. And yes, he did pant a lot.....
Holmes is very cute by the way!.....
Haha- you're probably right. It's all that new-ness getting used to him still :) I did finally change out his big fleece blanket in his crate to a summer towel. Poor guy was tossing & turning & panting all night before I did. Unfortunately I can hear his nails scratching the bottom of the crate at night... which leads to a whole other issue of 'How to trim dog nails.' :) Thank God for this site & You Tube
Wow! BIG difference! Lucy still looks adorable, but very much groomed. Do you keep her that short year round?
