I am thinking of naming my dog (either male or female), not sure which gender I'll get yet, an unusual name. Not so unusual, but more uncommon. I love books, so I was trying to think of character names from some of my favorite books. Everyone I talk to tells me to name a dog something more silly, not as serious. I'm conflicted!

Also, according to this recent NY Times article, you shouldn't give a dog a "person's" name but I love them for dogs! They said to stay away from consonants too..

Here are my choices so far:
Males: Beau (does it sound too much like no?), Milo, Frances, Dodger (Oliver Twist)
Females: Dagny (Atlas Shrugged) Dorrit (Little Dorrit)
Phoebe (catcher in the rye)

I'm really loving Frances for either a male of female. It's a version of Franny from Franny & Zooey, a version of Franz from Swiss Family Robinson & the Sound of Music, & the author of The Secret Garden.

I like Dodger & Dorrit too. I really want a name from a Dickins novel that isn't the common ones (like Oliver)

Any literary names you all can think of?

Wow, never thought of that with Shay!!! Too Funny....I had a friend who liked the name Tucker, until she called it out Loud...OOPS!! Lol
LOL yeah, I've been randomly calling out "Stewart" & "Phoebe" in my apartment in different tones, like a really happy inflection, normal (like I'm speaking) & angry inflections. Now I'm liking the the names even more!

Stewart is a great name for a Doodle!

I LOVE the name Stewart!   For obvious reasons - lol because here is my Stuart wearing his sweater although not argyle!!!   Stewart is the cream doodle next to his brother Rooney.  Both of my dogs were named after old movie stars.  Rooney after Micky Rooney and Stuart after Jimmie Stewart.  I changed the spelling on that one as for me the visual was more appealing with the ua instead of the ew.    This picture was when Stuart was a puppy - he just turned 2 this past week.

And he now is much more doodle like

I say the more Stewarts/Stuarts the BETTER!!!!!

He is "PRECIOUS" Jane, LOVE the way you spell his name!!! I know of "2" females also named Stewart. So I guess you can go either way with the name.

Just LOVE your pictures!!  Great names too!

Brenna is black and the name Brenna means raven haired in Gaelic.

I had picked out names for both my doodles before I went to pick them up.  By the time I drove the 7+ hours home with each of them they had new names =:))

I have a hard time using human names.  After 17 years as an elementary school teacher, there are many names I do not want to say every day for the next many years ;-}}

There are oodles of wonderful doodle names on DK - I will have to be more creative with future doodles!!

Jane- It's funny you changed the spelling, as I said my mother's maiden name is Stewart & ironically we used to live in Stuart, FL! But I think I'll keep it spelled the Scottish way. I also think the name is fitting since the dog will be red!

We will be watching to see what you get!!!

I had thought you spelled it Stuart because of the town in Fla. I used to live there too. Small doodle world.
