I think that sounds crazy! I'm no expert on hernia's in dogs but I don't think they just "go away" on their own. At least they don't in people. The breeder needs to pay whatever the medical cost is to fix it. Any reputable breeder would. Do you have a health guarantee? Has Aden been seen by your vet?
Umbilical hernias are very, very common in puppies. It is kind of ridiculous for your breeder to say "if it doesn't go away", as it definitely won't go away, lol. They are usually repaired while the dog is under anesthetic for spay/neuter. I would have your vet examine him and give you a cost to repair it in writing that you can send to your breeder.
Of course she noticed it.
I don't know that there is much you can do if she won;t pay more than $100 for the repair. It depends on how your purchase agreement is worded and whether you want to pursue legal action for a relatively small amount.
Myla has a small lump that I'm pretty sure is an umbilical hernia but she was spayed as a puppy, before I got her. I'm not sure if she had it when I took her for all of her shots. Should I bring her to the vet to check it out? It's a small lump and it really doesn't seem to bother her.
It would be odd for it to suddenly appear. If it was there when she was at the vet, he/she should have noticed it when she was examined.
Roo and my son both had umbilical hernias. Both "went away" as strange as that may sound. Roo also had an undescended testicle, so was neutered a little late, at about 8 months hoping it would at least show itself. He had to have abdominal surgery to be neutered as it never descended. At that time there was no longer any need to repair the hernia as indeed it had gone away, as did my son's. Basically, I guess, as a baby's body grows the small piece of intestine retracts and the muscles slide back together. It seems to be not uncommon in either puppies or human babies.
They don't just go away, and it's common. Finnley had one, and they fixed it when she was spayed. No problems before when she had it, or after the fix !
The breeder gave my son a $200.00 refund from the price he paid for Finnley.
Meg was spayed just before we got her and had a hernia taken care of at the same time. The people that had her before we rescued her did that at 4 months (I thought that was a bit young but it was already done so...)
It's not young. I've seen hernia surgery done on 6 week old puppies. It makes sense to me that while she was under anesthetic for the spay, they went ahead and took care of the hernia, too.
Absolutely.
