Who's doodles have a microchip? I've heard that some microchips cause cancer and then I've heard that some are safe. Thanks!

Awww what a sweet story!

Both of our dogs have microchips.  I made the mistake of signing up for the 'full service' with Home Again for Baker when he was little...that plan carries an $18 annual fee for various services (posters, etc) if the dog is lost.  I just called them to discontinue that service & was told by Home Again that the initial fee keeps the dog in their database for life, so it's a one-time charge.  The customer service agent also said it's important for the dogs to wear their microchip tag with their microchip # on it because a large number of pets are returned because of the tag alone.

Both of mine are microchiped. If they get lost, I would like to have definite identification.... Besides the microchip, other option will be tattooing them, and I would never choose that option....

It is required for licensing where I live. I was a late comer to microchipping but if my dogs were ever lost, I would appreciate their chips being read so that I could get them back.  My rescue is registered with both Home Again AND Avid!

I had an experience with my last dog jumping a 6' fence and getting a call to let me know he had been found!  So I got Camus chipped as soon as I got him. No problems.

I have had two dogs chipped. The first one lived to be 16 .5 years and the second one is now 6 years. No problems and I like the security of it.

We have had all of our dogs microchipped. I figure better safe than sorry. I am very happy to say that we've never had to use them but they do lend peace of mind.

Our city doesn't require microchiping, but they will pick up strays and scan and bring them right home if they are microchipped and have the city's dog license ofcourse. Otherwise, off to the pound you go! Both mine have been chipped by the breeder. My vet checks it yearly. I update with any changes in phone numbers or addresses as needed. Avid charges $6.00 to make changes. But that is the only fee after the initial set up fee.
We keep collars off when at home for safety reasons, but just Sunday DH came in from the backyard where both dogs were supposedly playing and asked "Where's Bella?" Well Miss Explorer decided to go through the open gate,(DH was mowing) through the open side garage door and proceed through the open garage door and was hanging around in front of the house just watching life go by. But if anything caught her attention, she'd be off like a bullet. Something can happen so quickly with these crazy doodles. My first thought was her collar is off, but she is chipped so I felt a tad less panicked.
As for the cancer scare. There are just some risks worth taking. We can change their food. Feed them in non-metal bowls, provide vet care and good exercise, but we will never eliminate all the risks of cancer. And a lot is genetic, so no matter what you do or don't do, they may still get it.

what's the story about metal bowls?? OMD

she's got a ceramic one, but never heard this before

Also you added so much common sense to this discussion.. & very succinctly
