You beat me to it, Jen. We did discuss it a bit in TFG comments section last night. There is no info on the terms of the agreement yet, but we have some time before any changes are made to the formulas.
As luck would have it, I switched JD to Wellness Simple Solutions a couple of weeks ago. But this is a concern for those whose dogs need limited ingredients AND a novel protein source.
I copied this from the FB page - Animal Parents Against Pet Treats Made in China. Glad we are not feeding the kids NB.
i just read this online and rushed here to see if it was posted!
LOL.. I always do the same thing as soon as I see something I come here immediately to make sure we have each other covered.....
Chloe has been on limited ingredient, venison and sweet potato formula for two years and she has not had any digestion problems during that time. I bought a new bag of her food this week and immediately noticed a change in the color of the food. Then I noticed a change in the color of her poop. Her poop has gotten softer each day and now is not formed. Other wise, she is fine. Does anyone have any suggestions on switching. I was looking at Taste of the Wild, which has some of the same ingredients.
Dee, the sale doesn't happen until this month and it's very doubtful that Del Monte has already started production, so there shouldn't be any changes yet. I would take a stool specimen to the vet to be sure that Chloe doesn't have some other issue that is causing the diarrhea. You might also want to return the bag of food and get another one.
Was she eating the LID venison formula because of any digestive problems or intolerances to any certain proteins that you are aware of? If so, you're going to want to find another LID food with similar protein sources and macronutrient content.
The TOTW formulas are considerably higher in protein, fat, and calories than the NB LID formulas.
Karen, thanks for the reply. Yes, I switched her food due to stomach issues when I first got her. All of her tests were negative so I switched her food. She has been fine on Natural Balance until now, which is why I suspect it is a change in the food.
She is going in for her two year check up and shots next week, so I will wait until then unless it gets worse. She was fairly normal this morning.
What is macronutrient content? I looked at TOTW because of the venison, but didn't know to look at the other stuff. I wish I had known about DK when she was a puppy, but I am so glad I found you all now! I have learned so much.
The macronutrients are the three sources of calories: protein, carbohydrates and fat. When choosing a food, you also want to consider fiber content, and Omega 3 & fatty acid ratios and sources, in addition to the protein and carb sources.
Do you remember what kinds of ingredients or formulas she ate before you switched to the NB?
Venison is one of the tougher proteins to find in dog food formulas, especially the LID formulas.
Thank you so much for your research and time devoted to our babies and thanks for all of the information regarding my inquiry. I had to look through my paperwork to find out the type of food the breeder had Chloe on and which I continued for the first month when she was so sick. It was Kirkland chicken rice and vegetable puppy food.
Natural Balance makes bison treats and I give her those when I can't get the vennison. She does fine on both. I am so disappointed about the company selling out. I will look into Great Life food but am not sure where I can find it. There are two small stores here that carry most of your recommended brands, so I think I will take the label from my bag with me and compare ingredients. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Chloe seems to react to any small change in her food so I even have to restrict her training treats.
My trainer has questioned what I was feeding Chloe on several occasions over the last two years due to her hyperactive behavior. Is there any food type that is better for that?
