Someone I trust really researched it for his dog and said that it basically came out as a slight loss (or more), for the typical owner/dog.  He didn't get buy it.  So far, we've not considered it for Griffin.  However, after watching Sophie's sudden illness and how the bills pile up, I realize maybe we should re-consider. Such things are unlikely to happen but when they do - wow.

I'd love to hear others' thoughts on this. Thanks.

Jennifer -- May I ask which plan you have?

Sheesh, I actually had to look it up.  My mistake it's $130 per quarter not year ( I could have sworn it was year). Pays 80%, it's petplan.

Still worth it, imo (even though I've thought I was paying per year lol).  Vets are super expensive here.

That sounds a little more like it.  You had me ready to switch there for a minute!  I have PetPlan as well.  Thanks.

I know our pet insurance (Embrace) has definitely paid for itself, both with Oscar and Lucy. Oscar had so many issues his first 7 mos. and the vet bills ran into the $1000's. the hard part was paying up front before being reimbursed. Pet insurance companies aren't billed directly like most people medical insurance, so even if you have pet insurance you still have to have the funds to pay the full amount initially (or a credit card for such emergencies). Whether you opt for a separate pet medical savings plan for unexpected accidents and illnesses, or pet insurance, it basically is the same thing. Problem is, how many people are disciplined enough to add to the savings plan on a monthly basis... and, there is the possibility there won't be enough funds at any particular time to cover all the pet's medical bills. Personally, I will never be without pet insurance.

I had been planning on getting pet insurance for Tugboat and our Papillon, Callie, and just put it on hold until we got back from vacation.  Stupid because you can buy & pay online - there was no reason to wait other than just taking the time to sit down and do it when we were rushing around trying to get ready for a trip.  Well, one day after we got back from vacation, our Tugboat had an eye injury which is likely going to run us into the $1000's before it's all over.  I'm kicking myself for not getting the insurance when I'd honestly planned to.

I'm still planning on looking into for them both, though, knowing they'll not cover the eye stuff, but other stuff going forward.

Just my two cents.

It's very likely you would have had a waiting period before the coverage took effect, so don't beat yourself up too bad about not getting it sooner. Now you know how important pet insurance is, and that's the main thing :)
I just purchased insurance thru PetPlan after reading a number of discussions about it here on this forum. You get a discount by typing in doodle in the coupon box plus you get a month free if you pay an annual premium. I have never had pet insurance before, but am happy about the decision because of the peace of mind it brings.

So I was looking at Pet Ins and I was wondering if anyone uses Petsmart?  I've been considering this option (it breaks down the neutering cost into payments, and depending on where we go that is expensive).  Does anyone carry both?
