Is there such a thing?

I thought I read on here somewhere that leather collars are best since they don't cause as much matting but I must be making that up since I couldn't find it in my search.  Then again, I was searching for it in the middle of all the search engine remodeling.

Goldie seems to be accumulating some pretty radical mats around the collar line. Today when I picked her up from the Groomer I was scolded told to be more careful about watching this area. The groomer left the giant mats around her collar line and told me to work on them. My first thought was, well why didn't she just remove them? I had mixed feelings about her leaving them but then I took it as an educational opportunity. It is MY job to do the regular maintenance and I do want to succeed at that responsibility so I'm  not entirely upset at her for leaving them for me but I did think it was odd.

She suggested that I leave a collar off of her, especially while she goes through her coat change. I'm not completely opposed to leaving her collar off but there are times when we'll need one.

Does anyone have any collar type recommendations that may not cause as much matting? The one we have is super cute but it is causing some major matting and by major I mean it took me 1 hour just to get one side cleared up (thank God for the Safari dematting comb!)

I keep the boys hair pretty long but I do shave around the neck and under the ear flaps to about one inch. It's not noticeable at all and I don't have a problem with matting. I also keep the collars quite loose, not enough that they can be slipped over the  head but I think that helps too.

I keep my curly doods hair shorter in the collar area to help with this problem. We also take their collars off when they are in the house, so they aren't wearing them all the time.

I, too, think rolled leather collars cause the least matting.  You can also cut the collar area very short.  I just keep my doods at about an inch or inch and a half most of the time.

My groomer usually looks Roxy over as soon as I come in and points out / scolds me about any issues she sees right away so she can clean them up but warn me at the same time.  haha

Your groomer should've removed the matts.  There are times I can't get Roxy's matts out.  I mean, isn't that what groomers are partly for?

Absolutely grt the rolled leather collar. Works great. No more breakage for Bay! I had gotten her a Ceasar fabric collar and it broke her neck fur so bad. Took a few months to recover but the leather has been great. Good luck!

Picked up our rolled collar today. Petsmart only had one rolled collar in the entire building and it just happened to be the collar and size we needed plus it was apparently on sale for $3! I noticed on the receipt it said BRET MICHAELS so then I looked on the collar and sure enough his autograph is etched on to the silver part of the buckle. Haha. You can barely see it but I had no idea Bret Michaels had a pet line. Hopefully this collar works!

Side note: I typed at least 4 different Bret Michaels one liners to be the last line of this comment but then deleted them every time. I'm still learning my audience and what I can and can't say ;)

Ha ha ha.  Perhaps Goldie is a secret Bret Michaels fan!

Good find, I love a good bargain. I guess Bret Michaels' career has gone to the dogs. :>) Please, we love a good one liner.

I know I'm late to the party but you got great advice. I keep Quincy's fur shorter under his collar and have his collar a little loose as well and we don't have a problem with matting in that area. We have a rolled leather collar as well and I really like it.

Haha. Donna that was a good one! I was going to say hopefully he is better at making pet products than he was at making a comeback (well that was one of my nicer one liners haha)

That's the last time I'd use that groomer. Do your job! If you don't want to comb out mats don't become a groomer. That's ridiculous. I'd also write a review on google and yelp.

I ask the groomer to cut the fur on their neck shorter than the body to reduce matting. You can't even tell.
