Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello all,

Well, it's been an interesting 2.5 weeks since we brought Riley into our family. The biggest problem is she refuses to poop outside. We can walk or play in the yard for an hour with her only peeing, but the minute she comes inside she poops. Every. Single. Day. She is only 3 months old so I can understand daily accidents, but it seems like she is holding it in just to come inside to poop! She even begs to come inside and gets mad at me when I won't let her! (Barks, won't walk away from the door, etc..)

Other than that little detail, she is perfect! She has gained 7 pounds (25.5 pounds now!) and stopped scratching all of the time since we switched her to a grain free puppy food. She has gained a few inches in height too! The vet said she is still a pound or two underweight though. Estimates for adult weight are now in the 70 pound range.

Her hair is getting really long for a puppy and needs to be brushed twice a day or it starts to look ragged LOL She had her first grooming appointment where she received a puppy cut (face, paws, sanitary) so she is staying a bit cooler now a days. I don't think she enjoyed it too much though since there are a couple of gaps on her nose where you can tell she jerked away!

Just for fun, Anyone have photos of their doodle that started out with long (about 3 inches) straight hair as a puppy? I'm a bit curious on what her hair may possibly look like when she is older.

Here is an updated picture of Riley (sorry about the size!)

Thanks for reading!

Riley is beautiful and I am sure you will get her house trained.

What a face, smooch!

Wow, Riley is gorgeous!! It sounds like she is a wonderful companion. As far as the poop issue, have you tried taking her poop out and leaving in the yard in the area that you would like for her to go? It sometimes gives them the idea of what you would like for them to do. I remember reading somewhere that "No dog will go where no dog has gone before". Which I'm sure is an overstatement but I think there is some truth to it.  Good luck!

That's a good suggestion! Now that I think about it, she used to poop in my neighbor's yard when we first got her. When we stopped that, she stopped pooping outside! I'll let you know how it goes, no pun intended =p

This was going to be my suggestion as well.  If this didn't work I would try going for a walk.  I know that some dogs actually need to walk to work up to a potty.  I know whenever we need to leave really early in the morning for an appointment and I need Lucy to go a little earlier than normal I take her for a little walk down the street and she will normally go for me.

Well...this is what I would do. I would take her out to potty. If she didn't poop, I would put her in her crate for 20 mins or so and take her back out again. I would do this routine until she pooped outside and I would do the happy dance and treat the first few days.
Exactly what I would do as well. Also. If I could catch her in the act, I would pick her up right in the middle of the act, say" Bad Poop", then carry her outside. Do the happy dance with treats if she goes. This startles a little which is why you must catch them in the actual act of pooping for this yo work. It took 1 time for Fozzie to get it.
Your Riley is adorable!!!

i agree 1,000 % exactly with Kary..maybe even treat more than a few days

but i would continue to crate her when she did not poop outside when you took her..otherwise she's good to be out of  the crate

Oohs, forgot to add I would treat and do the happy dance when she did poop outside the first few days.

Riley is so cute!  Congratulations!  I can't offer any advice about the pooping situation except what others have said here.  Good luck with that!  I'm sure she will get it!

I second Doodlebug's advice: if she hasn't pooped outside, when you come inside she goes in the crate for 15-20 minutes, then outside again. If still no poop, back in the crate for 15-20 minutes then outside again. And lots of praise and treats when she does go outside.

Riley is really beautiful and her little face is adorable!  The poop issue will work out and maybe if just once she goes out there and the scent is on the ground, she will return "to do" the same:)
