We have had some discussion on this before and finally now someone is bringing it to the media and calling for better rules. This happened in Canada but I fear incidents like these happen more than we know. Very few Vets have animals monitored overnight. For me, if they say they want to monitor my dog overnight there had better be someone watching, if not he is better off at home. While this particular vet does admit fault and settled the lawsuit, it is too little too late. If you have to leave your dog overnight, please ask if there will be someone watching before you make the decision to leave them.

I never understood the overnight with no one there. Aside from the obvious medical concerns my dogs are used to having someone there. They only wake me under duress, like needing desperately to go out on very rare occasions, but they know I am there. I just don't understand with the fees the vets collect that they can't have overnight supervision. I think the big overnight animal hospital near me must check the animals during the night but I really don't want to know. I would always take my dog home if humanly possible.

The specialty clinic where JD spent the night after his scopes is a 24-hour emergency facility, and they do have staff checking the in-patients throughout the night. His nurse gave me a full report the next morning. I would never have left him otherwise.

F, I have never understood this either, when dogs are at their sickest and most vulnerable they are left alone. It's wrong, just wrong for so many reasons.

Until recently I was not aware that dogs were left unattended at night in some facilities. I would not leave my dogs if that were the case. Makes no sense to me, especially after many of them have had surgeries, etc. Seems so unsafe to me.

So strange that they ever "require" it when there is NOT someone there.  What is the point?

I guess they can have IVs running or something like that. Ridiculous really.

How safe could it be to leave a dog with an IV running and no one to check it??

Right!  Brinkley pulls out is IV and he hates being in a crate.  He left his IV's alone once they let him lie down outside the kennel.

The answer to that is that it's not safe at all. Generally dogs left overnight have had surgery and are sedated, another glaring reason not to leave them alone. Thankfully we have never been put in this situation but it bothers me so much, must be the nurse in me. :>)

We are planning a 4 day trip to Disney...I have been researching this issue for over a month...both in fla & here in Chicago...not one vet says they have 24/7 monitoring!! And btw, most stop anyone being there past 7:00 pm which means if there are several dogs..one is going out a lot earlier than the rest and has a long 12+ hr period to go again. The vet in Fla is a personal friend & that's his deal also...was going to give DD a big run for some extra tlc but no one on duty till 7:00 am....I am Opting to have her stay with a woman I finally was referred to. Until you posted this Donna, I was kind of thinking I was being a bit over cautious, but now you have validated my concerns...and I don't feel as over protective!! Thanks

Glad you finally found someone to watch DD!

Rooney & Stuart would NEVER be left any place with no one there to watch at night.  Even at the dog resorts and camps that they might stay at - I always make sure that there is someone there 24 hrs a day.  We have a 24 E.R. near us and it is manned and the animals watch 24 hrs.  What is the point of them staying if there isn't anyone there?
