Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi All- I had a question about my goldendoodle pup who is about 18 months old.  Lucky has always been healthy and strong.  But he has had a cough for about 10 days now.  It sort of started out of the blue and is usually the worst in the AM.  He coughs when he gets up and some times spits stuff up.  He also sporadically coughs in the day and sometimes at little night.  I took him to the vet and they gave him  antibiotics which he has taken for about 7 days.  The cough is slightly better but not much.  He still coughs in the AM and a few times through out the day.  Still he seems happy most of the time and has a lot of energy and his appetite so he seems ok besides the cough.

As a first time doodle (and dog) owner just wondering if anyone had any advice or have seen similar cases.

Did the vet say it was a kennel cough?

Has he been boarded or been with dogs that have been?  Does he sound like a goose or a seal?  Is the spit up foamy and accompanied by clear mucous?  Could be kennel cough.  Even if vaccinated, they can still get Kennel cough.  Antibiotics do not get rid of it, as it is a virus, and only treat secondary infections if they develop.  It will clear on it's own with a healthy immune system.  My dogs both got it from a friends dog that had been boarded.  The Vet prescribed an antihistamine with prednisone and the cough was immediately suppressed.  You can also give a dog children's Robitussin cough syrup.  Appetite and energy were good with my dogs as well.  I am assuming the Vet listened to his heart and lungs to rule out other issues.

Our dogs got it even though they had the vaccine too. The children's Robitussin helped immediately.

I'd think another vet visit is in order if Lucky isn't significantly better in the next couple days. It sure sounds like Kennel Cough to me. Lucy has had it and it resolved within days after starting the vet prescribed meds (Doxycycline). I do hope Lucky is better soon. Hearing that type of cough can be heart wrenching.

Thanks to all the replies.  I think they thought it may be an infection and thus the anti-biotics.  But I appreciate any advice and probably will take him to the vet again.  I thought it may be kennel cough but it seems to have been a long time (10 days) and has not significantly improved.  Anyway I appreciate all the advice.

Cara, I hope to hear that Lucky is feeling great soon. I'm sorry he has had this for 10 days. I don't know how long most kennel cough cases last. Kona and Owen were better after 5 days but they both had the vaccination so I don't  know if that makes a difference. Poor Lucky and poor you!

Thinking of both you & Lucky...sending prayers that he his cough will go away and he will be good as new in no time...Feel better soon sweet Lucky!

Keeping Lucky in our thoughts and hoping he gets well real soon!

I have only had very mild cases of kennel cough that cleared right up after a few days of Clavamox, but I have heard that kennel cough can take up to a month to clear up. But you may want to have him looked at again just to make sure they are not missing anything--Good luck!

Hi Cara ~ I just read your post.  I hope Lucky gets well very soon.

I think a trip back to the Vet sounds like a good idea. I sure hope Lucky feels better soon!

How is Lucky's cough today? I hope to hear you are seeing improvement.
