Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hi all:
Josie is six months, 11.5 pounds (so very manageable size-wise), but she is VERY FAST MOVING and has become very destructive with her chewing. So far, she has chewed through two leashes, three easy walk harnesses (we do go with the Lupine leashes now, which they replace, fortunately, free of charge), and I always have an extra easy walk harness around because I can't live without it. I have also smartened up and taken both of these items off when not in use...
As for toys, she has chewed through her KONG!, anything made from that heavy plastic (Orka toys) (she chews off pieces - I don't think she's swallowing any of them, but I certainly can't leave her unsupervised with them). Rope toys are in pieces - usually lots of small threads. Even the "Tough Toys" stuffed things have fallen victim to her intense chewing. She'll chew a piece right off of them.
Again, fortunately, she doesn't seem interested in eating - only destroying.
She does love bully sticks but the smell of some of them is nauseating. She also loves a good antler at times, but these don't always do the trick. Sometimes I'll give her a Himalayan chew which keeps her busy for a good amount of time. Anything else like this???
She loves the stuffed things that have squeakers and crunchy noises. She also loves an empty 20 oz. diet coke bottle, but she did manage to shred a Poland Spring bottle last night (that was inside one of those stuffies - she got it out).
We have to watch her every second, or she'd be chewing up our furniture - loves pillows.
She lost some teeth about a month ago. I don't know if she's losing more or if she's having an early adolescence or what, but she has suddenly become very destructive.
She looks so innocent, doesn't she??? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Robin xxx

Josie is adorable, and does look quite innocent! My Oscar is an aggressive chewer too, but he'll swallow anything so we're really careful in what we allow him to chew (he's already had 1 intestinal obstruction). No stuffed toys, no bully sticks (I'm afraid he'd swallow them whole!), nothing really other than the red Kong rubber toys, balls and elk antlers (the bigger the better). Since Josie isn't swallowing anything I'd suggest you try the odorless bully sticks and Sam's Yams (dried sweet potato slices). Lucy was like Josie and loved both of those. She no longer gets them because Oscar would steal them away!
Thanks everybody! I ordered all of your suggestions on line today. Anxiously awaiting the deliveries!
This is kind of timely... just last night Oscar took a big chunk out of his red Kong 'bone' (I noticed him with something in his mouth and got it out before he swallowed it). Although both my dogs love the Kong toys, they definitely aren't indestructible. We also have one of the Zogoflex toys (the bone-ish shaped one) and it hasn't been destroyed in the 3-1/2 yrs we've had it. Its not nearly as popular with the doods as the Kong toys, however.
Ohhh, I feel your pain! 70 pounds each here and both destructive chewers (Dec worse than Lach) who want to swallow anything they can chew off. Including drywall, given half a chance. Yep, they've destroyed pretty much everything Kong. And two weeks ago I made the mistake of giving them giant knuckle bones. Supposedly indestructible. For less than half an hour. Lachlan spent the next two days vomiting chunks of bone. This is the same dog who had to have a rock - a rock! - removed from his innards.
I swear the only reason we don't throttle 'em sometimes is because they're so stinkin' cute!
Two products I've found that they love to chew on but haven't been able to even dent yet - Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Bone (http://www.planetdog.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=ORBEE%20BONES) and the West Paw Design "Guaranteed Tough" Zogoflex line of toys (http://www.westpawdesign.com/catalog/dogs/dog-toys/guaranteed-tough... - note that I have everything but the Zisc so I can't speak for that one). Most of the above toys in my house are well over a year old. Some of them even survived Declan's teething. Not a single tooth-mark to be found, and they play drag-each-other-around-the-yard with the West Paw Zumi!
I can't second enough the antlers and bully sticks. A trick I've learned with the large bully sticks if you have a swallower-of-whole-things (Declan again) is to lock a large vice grip on the center of that sucker. That way Dec has to chew both ends to the middle and can't make me have to dive down his throat to retrieve the last six inches!
I have several of the West Paw Design toys and I agree that they are fantastic!! Had them all for almost two years and they are all intact!
Hey Jen! Thanks for the tip on securing a vice grip to a large bully stick... great idea! I'll have to put that one to use real soon!
the rope rings from Martha Stewart seemed to last a while since there isn't anything to pull at just all knawing. They have different sizes I normally go with the large 2 ring.

The other that I don't even think I have seen teeth marks in is a jelly jax style toy. You can also put treat sticks or stuff parts of this one with fillings to encourage them to chew on it.

I just used the websites for the best pictures I think both can be purchased from any large pet store or online.
He's a cutie. I love the starmark toys they last forever.
