Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello everyone. So I have a 1 and a half year old goldendoodle. He is 90 lbs. I have noticed for a few months now that his left elbow has some of that reddish brown hair that sometimes dooes get if they are kicking a certain area.. Some have it around the mouth.. I showed it to the vet assistants and they said it is probably just from him lying down and putting pressure on his elbows.. But I wasn't sure that was it.. But he has so much hair and I couldn't see anything really... Well now I just have him a bath and I saw he has a scabby sort of thing on that same elbow.. I cut the hair around it to get a better look.. It is brownish and looks like some part fell off, not sure of it's from the bath and getting it wet.. He doesn't react when I touch it.. Now I'm wondering can dogs even lick their elbow? Is the discolorinf of the fur from it oozing or something? I'll be brining him to the vet tomorrow hopefully, but any ideas of what it could be? Thanks in advance pics attached

Geesh, I feel bad for showing all those photos. Just did it because each callus looks so different.   Maybe it is a hotspot.  Spud has different coloration in his callus areas though, so I thought that might be it also.

Dunno?

dont feel bad! i was just saying it may look moist because he had a bath lol :)

Monty's skin on his elbows is red as well. He does not lick it or scratch on in, so I just let it be. I think it's from laying down, you know how they smack their bones when they lay down. Personally, I don't worry about it.

Camus' left elbow, which is the side he lays on most often, is raw and red. I have had it checked by three different vets and applied numerous lotions.  Nothing has worked to heal it, but a cortisone cream has helped.  He wears elbow socks for the better part of the day to provide a cushion and protect.  If he does not wear his elbow socks it will bleed.  Both of his elbows were in bad shape when I first got him, but the right elbow is 95% improved.  This is a photo of the elbow I have had little success with.

Christine, I'm glad you brought that up.

When I first did a search for these pictures, there were all kinds of elbow pads for dogs who had this raw problem.

So, Chels, if it looks sore or uncomfortable, instead of a rough patch ( similar to what the paw pads look like) look into the elbow pads.

I wonder if Utter Cream would soften the spot?

Joanne,  Utter Cream is one remedy I have not tried, but since you brought it to my attention I will.

And, I make Camus' elbow socks. Very easy to do using 2 pair of sport socks (one pair for each elbow) 3 inch soft elastic that secures with velcro over his back.  2 inch elastic would probably work well for smaller dogs.  They do not restrict movement, are soft and comfy, and are machine wash & dry.

Ouch, that looks bad. Don't laugh Christine but you might want to try a little milk of magnesia. My mother's care givers did this when she had skin tears and things and it worked magic. It apparently is an old home remedy.

I'm not laughing - sometimes the old home remedies work well.  I'll give it a try. Thanks

Wayne has callouses on his elbows too.  He is a rescue and we assumed he spent a lot of time being tied out on concrete before coming to us.  I don't know if this is true or if he would have gotten them anyway.  He is also blonde and has sensitive skin.  He can develop hot spots if he eats corn.

The good news is that they don't bother him.  It's possible that your dog is licking at the spots occasionally causing the discoloration.

i havent noticed him licking it, but i will keep an eye on it... he doesnt react at all when i touch it.. he is never left outside.. my yard is turfed so no concrete there, and he does love laying on my lamintate wood floors as opposed to my soft couch, he sits with me for a bit on the couch, then i guess he gets hot and plops on the floor.. thats for all your input... ill keep an eye on it..maybe some coconut oil would help? what do you think?

The vet thought Camus must have been tied up on a concrete surface too.  He was not yet 1 when I adopted him and his elbows were raw.  Recently I was told that concrete is the worst offender due to alkaline, but Camus is never on concrete without his elbow socks.
