I guess you can prevent any animal from pulling if you have his legs bound up in stirrups and a rope
Joanna, HA! :)
There are lots of great discussions about collars and harnesses in the Training Group! We are trying really hard to train Myla not to pull without having to use special collars but it is a lot of work! What I have found to be working is not to let her "sniff" while we're going on our walk and if she's not sniffing and following a trail, she doesn't pull and walks beside us. I am treating her quite often when she's not sniffing as it is really important to us to have her walk without pulling so we are really concentrating on this right now. Of course, right now is when all the bears are in the corn fields around our house so it's really hard for Myla not to sniff!
I think my dogs would die of humiliation if they were caught out in public in a Horgan harness. Or maybe its just me :)
I swear by the Canny Collar. Both my doods have them and they don't even attempt to run after things like squirrels, cats and the like. Before I tried using the Canny Collar on Oscar the 2nd time (he'd had some difficulty getting used to it several months ago) I was going to try a prong collar, but I didn't need to. The Canny worked beautifully and Oscar didn't seem too bothered by it. Walking the 2 standard-size dogs is a pleasure now.
I had never heard of a Canny Collar so I had to look it up. Looks similar to the Gentle Leader but more advanced.
Like a mix of the with a Martingale pull. Interesting.
Our trotters wore less harness than that. LOL. Looks pretty silly to me. I believe that training is the most effective way to teach your dog to walk nicely on leash. A good trainer can teach you how to use tools such as a prong collar properly.
Yep. Don't fight the training, just do it. Best money ever spent
I used Gentle Leaders for my dogs and then ultimately switched to prong collars. Our trainer finally convinced me that the Gentle-Leader collars were MANAGING the pulling behavior, but the prong collars would TEACH the desired behavior. I resisted for a long time, but am glad that I finally listened. What's interesting to me is that both Wally and Charlotte heel better with no leash at all, though I would never take them on a street walk without a leash. I suppose I worked on the "with me" command even more than I practiced walking nicely on a lead.
