Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I posted on the "Most Recent page" and have been scouring here for some additional info. What I am Concerned about is..,it's early in the a.m. Before I can get to a store & actually cook some chicken...if I feed DerbyDoodle another helping of the Hills brand..it will be her 2 nd serving..by vets orders she should get fed this ( I am Learning CRAP) twice a day can it be harmful to hold her off till I can get the real food in her or just let her have this one additional helping till her 2 nd meal later in the evening.
I making an assumption the Rice in this equation is NOT anything instant or highly processed...just plain, simple home cooked food. Getting very frustrated that Vets prescribe what is considered really bad food for the Doods!!
I do want to add she was fine all thru the nite ..no accidents...but no stools either

If you haven't got any chicken I doubt whether one serving of this stuff is going to do any harm. It's basically cheap ingredients. If you haven't got any alternative until you get to a store then feed it. The best Is just plain white rice and boiled chicken. I boil the chicken with a bit of carrot (like making chicken soup) and then feed (minus the carrot pieces) it mixed with the rice quite sloppy. That way you are also giving lots of liquid. Vets no little about nutrition and make money from selling that stuff.
Ps. If you bought those tins do make a point of returning them and asking for your money back when Derby is back to normal.
I thought about that Nicky..I actually told him the probiotic he had dispensed last time I threw out. He's such a luv, though & family friend..I have to be cautious
Thanks for your help

If there is one thing I would hope that any FG member would get from this group, it would be to never feed Hill's Rx food to their dogs no matter what. And that vets do not study nutrition in vet school. This documented, it is not just my opinion. There is a conflict of interest as well. Do any of your doctors sell you food?

There is nothing in Hill's Rx food that is therapeutic, and it contains no medicine. It will not cure an illness.  It is a mixture of the cheapest ingredients possible that will provide enough nutrition to keep a dog alive, formulated to have the necessary vitamin/mineral/nutrient balance to sustain life. It's sole benefit is that it is "bland". So is plain old white meat chicken and rice.

I doubt that another serving will hurt Derby, but please get what you need to feed her a homecooked diet.

Thanks Karen, I had some frozen chix...I really appreciate the honest, strong, confident & knowledge based opinions you offer
Thanks
Seriously, though why not more education on nutrition for the vets? Don't get that part?

Your doctor didn't get much nutrition education in med school either. One basic undergrad course, the same one physical therapists and gym teachers take.

I really don't remember any nutrition course, maybe in junior high : )

Please take the time to read this discussion. It is old, and some of the info needs updating, but the basic information you need is all there.

Gotcha/thanx
Rodney, when my vet suggested the Hills rx food for my dogs, on the occasions they had G.I. issues, I simply told him I would feed plain chicken and rice instead. There's no need to make a big deal about it or be confrontational. Sounds like the best approach for you since you don't want to step on anyone's toes with the issue. I doubt any vet would ever challenge your decision as I'm sure most have heard it before.

Debb, this is perfect advice. Most vets refer to the Hills food as a "bland diet" anyway, and there's nothing blander than plain boiled white meat chicken and white rice. :)

When you feed plain chicken/rice how do you determine the portion size?  Is the 25 calories/lb rule correct?  When our pup had major tummy issues early on I had trouble figuring out how much he should be eating.
