Agreed! Do you have other dogs? People? Kids in the house? There are other considerations you need to address first, before sex of dog.
I think that males are more loving. Females can be very bitchy. Both of my sons have females and Murphy knows they are the top dogs in the family. I never thought that I would want a male dog because of the "male stuff' but none of that ever came about with Murphy. He doesn't even lift his leg! He is the sweetest dog I have ever had. I think because we had him neutered at 6 months he didn't develope any bad habits.
I wanted a male, and also a laid back puppy. I think males burn the grass less when they pee, and also I'd heard that the male temperament is more mellow. But I would have chosen laid back puppy over male, if I'd had to choose. Also, I think if you go see the litter, you will be drawn to the right puppy. I know with ours, the moment I picked him up, he melted into my arms. He's obviously got vim and vigor now, but I know as he matures, this calm, loving side will become more and more evident.
We had a discussion about this a few months ago, I think. You might want to look at back topics. I think the bottom line was personal preference, the individual dog and the temperament you are looking for
I wouldn't rule out boy dogs at all though! We've never had any "boy" issues with the 3 male dogs we've had. Toby even has the great quality of not having to stop and water each blade of grass we pass on a walk as some males do. It was more good luck than good management however. When he was a little puppy I started to leash train him. When we would go out for training or walks that's just what we did - not sightseeing or sniffing around. Now, he just walks right along at my side without getting distracted. And of course he is a sweetie with tons of personality.
GIRL!!! I totally agree with every on about the temperment, but I first ALWAYS look to the females, then pick the female with the best temperment.......................JMOPO!!!!
If you get to pick your own puppy rest assured that it will pick you. We actually have a girl (she picked us). She is a sweet cuddle bunny but nosey as they come. She is curious about everything. Not sure if this is girl thing, but she also has picked me as her person and sticks with me most of the time. She really doesn't spread her love around to everyone like some other dogs I know. Not sure if this will help but that's been my experience.
Each time I was pregnant, I wanted a boy. Can't really remember why it was so important to me now. I now have 3 daughters who I cherish and love very much. I also ended up with a girl cat named Amelia who won my heart and now I also have a girl doodle who has won me over. I can not imagine my life without any of them being a part of it. I am also thinking I just wasn't meant to have a boy, period! I really think it has a lot to do with personal preference. But I also think you will really know when you first see the puppy and it won't really matter if it is a boy or a girl.
When I got Max he was alot more laid back then the females that kept jumping on me. He is very smart and a gentle boy. I have also had a female that was a very good loveable girl. Have fun choosing.
Oh, oh - if you've read about the red rocket, lipstick thing you've probably eliminated a boy puppy from your future plans. But, trust me, boys are great - and that does not happen all that often to make it a major decision factor. All in my humble opinion.
yeah, i agree...i mean, i just tell him to lay down and he does and it goes away...it's not THAT big of a deal even though lately it has been made out to be on doodlekisses :)
