Update and Lola's ears.....

Just an update...Grady Boy is still taking his meds for Lyme Disease, and gladly I might add with cheese of course! Had to take Lola Doodle back to vets office, she has a double ear infection!!!! Am wondering if this is a puppy thing or a doodle thing??? Ive never had a dog that has had an ear infection before so I am curious. Also can you believe that in the 4 days between her vet visits...SHE GAINED 4 POUNDS!!!! Mommas baby is growing soooooo fast!!!!!

What kind of protein does Libby eat?

F - I believe she gets a dry kibble with hydrolized protein, formulated for sensitive stomachs and allergies.  Her mom gives me the food in a ziploc bag so I haven't seen the actual food bag for awhile.  All I know is that it has worked miracles for Libby.  No more gastrointestinal problems, no more ear infections, and she's perfectly healthy with a beautiful shiny coat.  Just had her checkup at the vet, in fact, and all is well.  I can check the brand and specifics later.  It took them awhile to figure out the problem but it's been almost 2 years and it's like a different dog, issue wise.

It is a floppy ear thing.  My Springer has had lots of ear infections, Ned has never had one at all, and Clancy has had a couple in his 5 years.

Shelly, I have years of experience with very chronic and severe ear infections with one of my doodles and some tips I can share with you in regards to Lola's fighting you with ear treatments is to go slowwwwwwly. Touch ears, treat, bring ear flap back, treat, rub and pet gently in the fleshy outside part of her ear, treat, use a cotton ball, after you let her see and smell it, to just gently rub the inside of ear, treat. Give her time to be relaxed and unafraid. No holding down or forcing her to stay. Just keep making it as positive an experience as possible. IF she has years of infections ahead of her, this will all payoff huge dividends in the long run. Think of it as you would any other training. Positive reinforcement, praise, little sessions at a time......you know the drill. Murphy still walks away when he sees me go near the cabinet and bring out the cotton balls and ear cleaner, but he will come to me, lay down on cue and roll over for the second ear. He doesn't enjoy it at all, but he is trained to tolerate it and knows he will get a massage and cuddles and a treat. Then he goes nuts shaking his ears and rubbing his head on the floors, rugs, bedspread, couch.....whatever he can get on. I hope for you its not a chronic doodle thing with her, but she will need her ears cleaned her whole life, so might as well make it less stressful for both of you.

It's a doodle thing! Darwin has had multiple ear infections, despite us keeping his ears hair free as much as possible. Wishing the best for you and your cute doodles!

Beau had an ear issue and I had to clean his ears daily for 10 days.  The vet suggested that I do it the same time each day.  Put a leash on and take him to the room where you will be cleaning (for me that was the laundry room - gently put the liquid in one ear and then the other and gently rub them.  After he shakes his head, I gently wipe the underside of his ears to take away the wetness and towel dry his ears. He immediately gets several treats and lots of praise!  I did this and after two days he was no longer running away from me because he felt safe in all other parts of the house.  I am so glad his ears cleared up and we have had no other issues with them.  I hope Lola heals quickly.
