I think it looks like a very big overweight (or very furry) cat - I think if it was a bobcat, the legs would look longer in proportion to the body - as I doubt you would ever find an overweight bobcat.
Of course :) That's the funny thing about the written word. You don't get the full flavor of an in person conversation with facial expression and tone. My better half is Swiss German. He and his daughter cannot comprehend sarcasm. (Did I say better half? I must have a fever!) His daughter told me that the Swiss don't do sarcasm. This only begs for more sarcasm but it might as well fall upon deaf ears.
Looking forward to hearing the opinion of the wildlife officer.
Looks like a Lynx to me - bobcat - call it what you will...
Many years ago we were tooling through the AZ desert/mtns in the wee hours and stumbled upon a pair literally playing in the highway, pretty cool.
Thanks for your input, Sally! You may very well be right!
We got a answer from our friend the Ca. Wildlife, Fish & Game Warden. He thinks it is a Bobcat. He said typically, Bobcats have a certain area they patrol for food and will mark their territory, spraying the perimeters. This area is typically 50 miles or so. He pointed out, that about, 6 miles from our home, they are in the mist of widening a road and have disturbed a lot of the natural habitat and he wonders if this guy didn't wander up from there in search of food and water. We have an OVER ABUNDANT supply of Ca. hare on the property. ( Evidence that he has not been visiting us for very long). It is anyone's guess if he will return and let us capture him again on camera! But I will be checking! He was going to send me a few of his pics of Bobcats that he has taken when he gets the chance.
If that cat caught the rabbit, he'll be back - or she..... coming up season for mating and they are all hungry. Oh, yes those desert bunnies are BIG!
LOL...You are not kidding! The rabbits around here look as if they are on steriods! We did find all kinds of bunny fur in the yard one morning....I just don't know if it was the same morning as the "cat" roamed through. DH took a rabbit ( dead) out of the pool yesterday ( he obviously fell in and then didn't have the smarts on how to get out....don't know how well rabbits swim!) and tossed it down at the end of the property, knowing fully, something would take it. Sure enough, it was gone early this morning.
Maybe you should have placed the dead rabbit where the cam is and you could have gotten another pic but I guess you really don't want a bobcat that close!!! LOL
LOL...see.....great minds think alike! I said the exact same thing to my husband....but he said, Yeah, and you'll be out with Enzo when the "cat" comes along and Enzo will be Bobcat chow. In reality, I'm guessing "baiting" by the camera is probably not all that smart! ;)
I jealous that you got a picture of anything. We put up the camera the kids gave us for Christmas trying to catch an image of what is leaving the smell trail in the back patio that drives the dogs nuts about 5 out 7 days. So far all we have captured an image of is two doodles sniffing the ground!
We occasionally see a bobcat around here and honestly the do look like a very large housecat, especially at night.
