Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Even though physically, Jack is a perfect combination of his two parent breeds, he has some traits/behaviors that are very clearly one or the other. For example, he is absolutely addicted to retrieving...all he wants to do is catch/chase a ball (or other object) and bring it back to me. He wants to do this 24/7. You cannot sit down anywhere in Jack's presence without having a ball dropped in your lap. I cannot interest him in any other game.
On the other hand, he must get his eating habits from his poodle side, as he is an extremely picky eater. He rarely finishes a meal, and often turns his nose up at treats that he seemed to enjoy the last time it was offered...as if he just isn't in the mood for that particular flavor today. I know labs are famous for eating just about anything, so it must be the poodle side, although I will say my pure-bred poodle was much less fussy than Jack.
How about you? Any behaviors or habits in your F1 that you can clearly identify as being either poodle or retriever?

I am laughing out loud at this, Nicole! I love that 2nd sentence about her "inner poodle" having given up! LOL-Jack is the same as Mazie, except he wasn't even blessed with the curly coat! He is MUCH easier in terms of what he doesn't get into than my poodles were.
Actually, really smart dogs can be a pain in the butt...don't forget that one of the qualities used to judge intelligence in dog breeds is "problem solving".
When you stop and think about what the dog's 'problems' are...(How can I reach that food up there? How can I get over this gate? etc.)...I really appreciate having a not so brilliant doodle!
I see very little golden retriever personality in my doodles... I've had two golden retrievers and they were NOTHING like my GDs. Much mellower, less active, ate all the time, sweet and somewhat goofy. My GDs are high strung, high energy, intelligent, trouble makers, one is a very picky eater. Lilo does have the broader retriever body, but inside, she's all poodle. Rocky could easily pass for a purebred poodle, except he has a long and beautiful tail (I wish they woudn't crop poodle tails!!).
Isn't it wonderful and fascinating how very different all these F1 doodles are?
But one thing that they all DO have in common is how adorable they all are!
Mocha is also a 24/7 catch/chase the ball. We can't sit down without her bringing the ball to us. She is also a real hide and go seek addict. Hide a ball from her and she never fails to find it and find it fast. As for her eating.... There is nothing she won't eat. When she was a puppy she even ate a sock and also a sponge which we had to make her throw up so there would be no blockage problems...that was real fun!!! We have seen improvement. No more swallowing anything is sight --- thank heavens. She just turned 1 yr. 2 days ago and I told her she was a big girl now and there would be no more "tricks" Some of her stages were hard to live thru. We were always afraid she would get into something that would harm her. She also used to counter surf and we tried everything to break that habit. Then one day I guess she just decided to give it up and let us win that argument. Any other Goldendoodles counter surf?
Am looking forward to this site and hearing some of the things that other Goldendoodles are doing etc.
She is really a golden retriever disguised as a fluff-ball ! LOL
My labradoodle is a counter surfer. She just turned 7 mos and I'm hoping she stops soon. One day I was mixing up some cookies and looked over my right shoulder to see where she was and what she was doing, I didn't see her, when I turned back to the counter there she was standing on her hind legs front feet on the counter on my left side!!!! Just checking out what I was doing. She is very light footed and I seldom hear her come up behind me. I scolded her but was laughing at the same time.

She will take a hand towel off the counter every time I leave one lay there. Strange, if I hang it over the oven handle to dry, she doesn't touch it, just the ones I leave laying on the counter. I think it's all a game with her because I will go after her to get it back. The other day she trotted out of the kitchen with one in her mouth and I decided to ignore it for once. She took it into the living room and when I didn't come after her for it she brought it back to me, I think to be sure I saw she had it and would chase after her.. lol. I scolded her for having it, told her to drop it and she did.

I'm not sure if thats the Lab or Poodle in her, she can be a little dickens but I love her and she honestly has me laughing out loud at least once a day.
I can't say for sure, but my instinct says, it's the lab. None of that sounds the least bit poodle-y to me, and I'm fairly experienced in Poodle Nonsense 101.
She is so beautiful, and it sounds like she has quite the sense of humor, too. I am smiling just picturing her with the towel!
What joy these doodles bring to our lives!
I so understand the part about LOL at least once a day. What's even better is she's got DH doing it too! Because of this economy his job is very stressful. Fergie is such a relaxing happy thing for him to come home too. He so didn't want her and now he's so crazy about her. He takes her everywhere. Hopefully Lucy with bring us double the laughs. I no she will.
Holly (13 month F-1 Goldendoodle) shows virtually no interest in fetching. Occasionally, she will fetch a toy for a while indoors but, has no interest in fetching outdoors even when her buddy, Shadow (an English Lab) visits. Shadow has a fetching fetish and will fetch a ball until she drops.

Holly is a great eater and is not fussy at all about what food she eats. She loves treats of all kinds.

One attribute that she derived from her standard poodle dad, Roscoe, is that she loves water. Roscoe has several ponds on his property and the breeder, Heather Goines, says that Roscoe is always in one of the ponds. Holly swims in our pool in the hot summer but, doesn't seem interested during the winter months.
I see my mini GD Gracie as being poodle in her high jump and athletic antics. She just jumps straight up for any reason. My friends with poodles say that bounciness is a trait of theirs. I feel like she also gets her intelligence from the poodle. It takes her no time to figure out opening gates, doors, etc. She is open and loving like a golden, never wanting to be away from her people. I can get her to get any thrown objects but as a rule she does not return the prizes! Not sure where that trait comes from...
Being only half retriever, LOL!
Got a question! So I got Lucy last Sunday and I'm watching her constantly. When I look at puppy pictures of her she looks exactly like Fergie. I think they might end up looking like twins. That be very OK with me. I have noticed that her tail is always up and curled over her back. I don't remember that with Fergie. Is that the poodle in her? Incidently, Fergie really likes to Fetch too. Fergie loves to swim but I think both breeds like that. Fergie doesn't look like either breed though. She looks like a doodle.
