It works like a charm, but it took time to start working (at least with my puppy, Lucky, who is now 5 mos). He has finally started ringing the bells when he wants to go outside. It took at least 6 weeks of consistent ringing before he started using the bells.
We hung the bells on the door when our puppy was 8 weeks old, and we were not particularly diligent showing her to ring them. She taught herself and now at 14 weeks old rings for all potty breaks. She even rings them much louder for needing a poo!!!
It has been a great help, and no accidents for three weeks!
I want to try that too. My son-in-law did this with their dog 8 years ago when he was a pup - worked great for them. He just tied a bell on a long shoelace.
All three of our dogs are trained to ring the bell to go potty or if if they want or need to go outside. It works wonderfully!!! But yes, sometimes a puppy that is just learning will abuse it for awhile and ring constantly. It usually doesn't last more than a week or two. And when you don't want to deal with it, you can crate the puppy, put it on a leash and attach the leash to you, or put up a baby gate that blocks his way.

Macey learned to ring her bell to go out within a week of training at 3 months old. Doodles are smart pups!

Joey got the hang of it after the first week - when he was about 12 weeks or so. However, when he's bored or we are busy doing other things besides giving him attention, he will ring it just 'cause. One time, I thought he was bluffing though, and next thing I knew, there was runny poo everywhere (don't think his stomach agrees with bully sticks) so now I am taking his word for it!
I got the bells for Sadie too. I wasn't able to use them right away because I was having some remodeling done and the kitchen door wasn't on the hinges for a while. So she would come and look at me and sometimes bark to go out. After I had her for about 3 weeks we started with the bells, she would come and let me know she had to go out and I would take her to the door, I would ring the bells and say potty and out we would go. She seemed to be afraid of them, whenever I would hold them up to her she would back off and bark.. lol.. I didn't think it would work but I kept the same routine up and in about 2 weeks one evening I heard the bells ring faintly. I would ask if she needed to go potty and she would bark and run to the door, after that she started using them. If she would come and bark at me I would say 'well go ring your bells' and she would.
She does ring them to go out all the time now. She doesn't always have to go potty though.... I have a fenced yard so I let her out to play too. Whenever she is bored in the house or needs to potty, she rings the bells.
Lucca is doing the same thing. He uses it to go out to play too. It works great if he is in the kitchen. The only problem is when he's in the rest of the house. He forgets to run to the door! Hopefully it will come with maturity. He is 15 weeks. He just figured out how to climb the stairs. It's pretty comical!!
I used the bells from the time we brought Beckett home. We put them on the door that we always took him out from. I would touch his nose to the bells and say "outside, ring the bells" every time he went out.It took just a couple weeks before he was ringing them a lot of the time. By a month or two, he was ringing them most of the time. He had his last accident in the house when he was only alittle over 3 months old. I really think the bells helped a lot!! I highly recommend them. He did go thru a period after he knew what they were for, where he "abused" them and rang them a lot. But he got over that. If we got another puppy, I'd do the same thing.
works great!!! Ziggy learned in a week at 9-10 weeks; Marley took longer but rings pretty regularly now. He's almost a year old and still has a few accidents-mostly poo-and he knows better but prefers the mat by the front door (not his door) for #2, and will go there right after being out, peeing, and waiting for him to poop. Ugh-he's a different story. God makes them cute for a reason!
