We are in a discussion at our house about the yard.  We live on sandy soil and when the girls run through the yard they actually kick up divots when the make a turn.  We can not get the grass to grow back in there (to be honest grass/week mix that looks like grass when we keep it mowed).  So the discussion is whether to concrete the entire thing or try to leave a grassy area or make a pea gravel area for the potty part.  I like the idea of having a potty area, the concrete gives me pause.  I know we have to do something because by the end of the coming summer we will have nothing left but dirt.  I worry that all concrete will get too hot for them in the hot part of summer and think we should do some low decking in a few areas to give them the opportunity to get their paws off the host concrete.

Any ideas and pictures of what you have done would be helpful and appreciated.  I want to show my husband some options other than pouring solid concrete...it is a pretty sizable yard.

I don't think you will be happy with all concrete.  Boring, for one, hot in the summer for another.  Perhaps some pavers?  You could start browsing on Houzz.com for ideas-it's quite a website for home improvement

Thanks, great starting place.

Another option could be to lay down a good layer of topsoil to and then reseed your lawn.

I agree with this - we have an acre all in lawn and garden and we don't have a problem (mind you, we don't have two dogs) Myla runs constantly on it and plays catch etc and we don't have any problem. We've been here for 34 years and have had two other dogs and the only thing we found is that a path was worn where our dog would constantly walk around the house, but we solved that by placing a sidewalk there.  The only problem we have is spots where Myla pees, but once we mow the lawn, that is gone until the next mowing.  I think if you put a good layer of topsoil, as Rose states, on the sand and then reseed with a quality seed, you will be fine.

oh... and go to a good gardening center or online and get a recommendation for a lawn seed for your particular problem.  There are so many varieties of lawn seed, something for every conceivable purpose.

Call your county extension office, they are great with any thing organic or pest related.

Just a quick google brought up these suggestions:

We had a recent post regarding fake grass. I hear its expensive, but it won't die or turn yellow! Lol
