Can anyone recommend a durable non toxic (ish) dog bed

A few months ago we picked up a super soft comfy bed for Lexi. She LOVES it. She loves it so much that she discovered she could chew off the bottom and pull out all the stuffing. I had been warned by friends that it's common for puppies to destroy their beds, so I didn't buy anything too expensive. 

But now she's getting to the stuffing, which I'm sure is some toxic substance from abroad. And I'd like to replace the bed. Does anyone know of a durable, less toxic dog bed? I have a west paw nap mat that has really held up, but their beds all look like they could be easily chewed and chomped.

Orvis has their Tough Chew line that are supposed to be extremely durable and difficult for dogs to tear. 

JD is not a chewer or destroyer, but he has one of their memory foam beds and it has held up beautifully. 

Orvis dog beds are made in the US, too.

Orvis is the only bed Finn hasn't chewed to get to the stuffing.  I was a bed of the month club member so I finally figured it would be better and less expensive in the long run to go to Orvis.  We've both been very happy. One year and counting.

Finn loves fleece so much that I keep a large fleece pad in my car for him and one under my desk but the temptation of a fleecy bed with stuffing is way too much for that doodle :)

We resorted to ordering crate beds from K9 Ballistics after Oscar managed to chew thru 4 crate beds, try as he might, he has not been able to put a dent in the the new ones, I would highly recommend them. They also offer a replacement guarantee!

We had a Kuranda for are older Golden.....Enzo loves it! I think because she stays cool. I put a soft comfy mat on top and she pushes it off. It is VERY durable ...our Vet uses them in their boarding facility.

That's interesting. I just found a bed online by West Paw called the Heyday bed, too. They claim it is their most durable bed, and it's machine washable. I have a nap mat by them, and I love that I can just toss it in the machine whenever it gets grungy. Lots of good ideas here. Clearly durable costs more, but it's worth it. Throwing away beds regularly isnt' very cost effective. And yes, I think fleece is Lexi's BFF. She loves sleeping on those microfleece blankets. We have a bunch around the house, and she'll drag them to a corner and just curl up on one.

I get all my dog beds from Sierra Trading Co.  They have frequent sales, and the beds really are indestructible.  We have them on our deck and in the laundry room for the dogs.  We also have clips under the eaves for hanging them when it is rainy weather.  In the house, they have sleeping mats made with temprapedic (sp?) foam.  We put the mats up against the wall during the day, and pull them down when we go to bed at night.  We also have mats for the car.  Good news is that she will probably outgrow this stage of bed destruction, but in the meantime, get some big canvas beds from Sierra Trading Co.

We have several Kuranda beds w/ a fleece blanket over them and an Orvis memory foam bed. We love them both and so do the dogs. My dogs are not a destroyer/chewers, but we do have 3 of them so the beds get a lot of wear and tear and have held up nicely.

Our Journey chewed beds, she has the mighty molars and loves to use them, so she lost a few beds. She kills most things guaranteed chew proof :)  I bought cheap ones, we are all together 24/7 and if she chewed we pulled the bed up and moved it - but the last time she chewed on one we caught her in the act, pulled the bed up again -  a couple of weeks later we tried again. That was a year ago and she does not chew beds anymore.   Now we have dog beds all over the house - still they don't mind the floor. 

A local shop here carries a bed cover that you can stuff with whatever - seriously, on the package it says use your old towels or those old raggedy things you hang onto.  I bought one for out little guy, thinking I'd be smart and not have him chew up a whole bed. He is not a bed chewer, but the cover is quite tough.   My previous dogs had the LLBean or DrFosterSmith heavy duty beds - but the GSD did trash his.  Anyway, I can call and ask about the cover brand if you like, but you can fill any bed cover with old towels or sheets before graduating to a soft pillow.

I would be even more resistant to a memory foam for a chewer, that stuff is drenched in flame retardants and other nasty chemicals, not to mention the density of it.

There are several companies that make the bed "shells" that you can fill with your own old towels, linens, clothing, or whatever you like. At least that way you know the "stuffing" isn't toxic.  Here's a link for one company, I know there are others:

Hi Sally, This is exactly what I think about memory foam in general. I don't really want it in my home. These are great ideas. I'm going to check them out! Thank you! (It's actually true that Lexi's most favorite spot to sleep (aside from beside me) is on top of a pile of clean laundry ... esp. towels and sheets.

I don't want it in my home either, it's the most toxic substance made of petroleum and doused with a host of chemicals that ooze into the environment - don't have to eat it for it to make you sick, just breathing the outgassing would be enough to cause problems, not only for the dog but for the people in the house. 

We have a daybed in our living room and I have it piled with pillows, my little guy is nuts about it - big girl is too big, that's ok for her to have boundaries.   I would rather have no dog bed than a chunk of poison.    I took little guys first bed made from a pillow case stuffed with old t-shirts, he made it to the bed cover filled with old towels and now has a pillow inside.  Journey was a total bed trasher, but little Felix Unger manages to rarely even muss his at all.
