About a week ago we woke to Daisy crying very early in the morning, she had thrown up in one corner of her crate and in the other there was a yellow foamy substance, looked like spit up. We cleaned her up and she seemed okay, ate and drank normally, normal poop, and that was it. Then, this morning when we got up she had another yellow foam puddle in her crate. She wasn't crying or anything and seemed totally normal. I have no clue at what time of night she gets sick. I told the vet about the first incident last week and he said if she was eating and drinking normally it was okay. But with the second incident now I am worried. Could she have eaten something? Is it food related?

Any idea what is going on??

Things to consider:

About a week ago we began her switch to Acana Grasslands, she eats it up and poop is normal, could this have something to do with it?

She had her last round of puppy shots yesterday.

She doesn't get upset or distressed in the crate, she goes right in happily (not emotional throw up I don't think).

We feed her at 7:30 and she goes to bed at 10:30 so there are 3 hrs in between eating time and bed time.

Help. :(

oh! That makes me feel better!!! :)

You can find the calorie count on the bag (usually WAY at the bottom of the bag info) and do a comparison to see if Acana has more calories per cup (called kcal) --if they are about the same, don't change her amount!

Lol yes! I've kept her feeding at three times a day (even though vet said you can change to 2x) because of her hungry nature!!! I just punched in the calories and it said TOTW 2.4 cups per day, Acana 2 cups so there is definitely a difference. But I will make sure her tummy is nice and full from now on. :)

Thanks for taking the time to read and respond. :)

Jordan, Hoka was actually doing this for a bit too.  I think he his stomach was too empty overnight.  I started feeding him a later/larger dinner and the problem stopped.

Oh Marie this makes me feel so much better! I am definitely going to try this!!

Hi Jordan,
I just transitioned our dogs and pup to Acana wild Prarie. On the pkg it says you should feed pups more than adult dogs (it gives you the amounts based on pups age). I didn't notice this at first and I was feeding pickles, our 5 month old, less than I was suppose to and I figured our he was still hungry. Now he is all better a full. So you might want to check the feeding amounts. Good luck with your sweet pup.

Hi Jenn! I totally agree the bag is kind of confusing! I did notice to multiply the adult amount by 1.5% (I think it was) for puppies. I also just did a puppy food calculator based on weight and calories per cup and it looks like I will be giving her 2 cups a day of Acana as opposed to 2.25 cups of TOTW. I am going to give her the last meal around 9 now I think and probably put a bit extra in this feeding. Thanks for pointing this out!

It's very common for puppies to bring up yellow bile in the morning, and it's due to their having an empty stomach for  so long (overnight). Instead of moving her dinner back, try giving her a small snack shortly before bed. It can be a small amount of her kibble or a couple of good quality dog biscuits.

Thank you, Karen!

Empty tummy often equals yellow foam (empty tummy). I started to give my boys a handful of kibble at about 10.30/11 at night and it stopped happening. Puppies do throw up periodically and sometime it can also be a full tummy full of food....they are like children, you just have to watch that it's normal and not something that needs more attention. Any time the boys have had a tummy upset requiring the vet they were a) throwing up more than once in a short space of time or  b) throwing up and having diarrhea combo

Makes sense. I am definitely going to switch her dinner to later and maybe even some snacks before bed. :)

Jordan - I think everyone has given you all the advice you need, but this has happened to Libby many times in the morning, when she is hungry.  I know it's comforting to hear that other doodles have the same issues sometimes!  I'm sure Daisy is fine and you are doing all the right things!
