My 14 month old mini-golden doodle, Darla, had to go to the emergency vet this morning at 4 a.m.

She vomited (just liquid)  in her crate and then proceeded to vomit again (3x's) a bloody mucus.

The vet did not find anything obvious.  Questioned as to whether she ate something toxic or garbage…nope..she is pretty good in the house.  I suspect she ate something out in the grass (we live in So. East Florida) and there are plenty of crazy critters in the grass which is very dense.  What a scare!

He gave her a shot to stop the vomiting and some fluids under her skin.  Suggested we give her 1/2 of a pepcid (otc) and keep a close watch on her.

Question:  Has anyone else ever experienced bloody vomit?  What was the cause?  Did your dog recover without a problem?

14 week old? Could it be parvo? Did they check for that? I hope it just got into something in the yard. So sorry you are going through this?
14 months, Darla must be vaccinated.

She is 14 months old…she has been seen regularly by our vet and is up to date on all shots.  Thanks!

No experience with this but I hope Darla recovers quickly.

Ditto.

Yes, Tara had an episode with vomiting blood. It was terrifying!  She did something very similar to what you are describing. She vomited plain liquid/bile first then proceeded to vomit pools of blood. Our vet explained that sometimes a blood vessel in the stomach can break during the first vomit causing more irritation and vomiting but now with blood.  He just had her take it easy and rest for a day or two, he didn't give her any meds.  She was fine and it never happened again.  Maybe Darla ate something that irritated her stomach enough to cause the vomiting which then aggravated it even more causing the bleeding. I hope it this is the last of it for her! Please update us later!

I had this one time. It is scary. It turned out that my girl had gotten into some very large burrs and ate one or more while trying to get them out of her coat. This irritated her throat and stomach and she started the blood tinged vomiting. My vet said that dogs have such strong acid in their stomachs that their throat gets raw enough to bleed a bit. Now that's a sore throat! I put aloe in some liver water and sprayed as much of her throat as I could with silver colloids. I felt I needed to do something. She did recover quickly.

What is liver water?  It sounds like you are well schooled in caring for animals.  I think we get educated with every incident we go through with our babies.  I just wish the vets were more forthcoming with information.  I feel they are just like most doctors….they don't give us too much info.  After giving Darla the antibiotic med her stool turned a mustard yellow and loose.  I called the vet and they said that was a normal response to that med.  Now why didn't they just tell me that?  Anyway I am just so relieved to finally see some improvement in her now.  Thanks for your information,  Hopefully I won't need it but it is good to know.  I think I will put together a emergency kit for her.  That would be a good discussion topic…What to put into a Doodle Emergency kit.

LOL Elly.  Believe it or not we have discussed pretty much everything here.  Take a look:  http://www.doodlekisses.com/forum/topics/taking-your-doodle-on-vaca...

Liver water is just the water from boiling liver. I boil it until well cooked. About 10 to 15 minutes for large pieces. Less for small pieces. I save the water in jars and cut up the liver for treats. When I serve the liver water I water it down again. It's amazingly healing. I have saved a few puppies lives by keeping them hydrated during a time of stress. I have even given it to newborns that were weak. One drop of liver water on their tongue alternating with one drop of honey water every half hour. It works miracles. I also use it to increase fluids for things like a uti for older dogs. I keep some in my freezer for emergencies. Recently my vet told me to boil pork soup bones to leach the minerals out of them and give it to one of my dogs. Now they all go crazy for it and it's very good for them.

Exhausted..chapter II of our poor Darla's troubles...vomiting stopped..blood tinged excrement followed..trip to our vet and more tests and drugs and more opinions! Blood lipids were all normal..(great)..now it"s anybody's guess...maybe whipworm..so we will deworm..give her antibiotics and probiotics...my poor sweet natured Darla is so good through this medical conundrum ...Will keep all posted. Thanks to everyone...it means a lot!
One more thing…Vet suggested I put her on Trifextis (sp?) Yay or Nay?

Poor girl.  Glad you have a plan moving forward.
