Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
We're bringing home our new 5mo Monday :) She is 30 lbs now and is a small standard. I'm getting a couple baby gates to block off parts of the house we aren't able to supervise her in... will regular height ones be big enough or will just just climb/jump over?

what I recall is that my very calm Quincy (hmmm) got nuts when the repair man was upstairs fixing whatever, and Quincy was downstairs with just the "normal size" fence blocking off the stairs to the upstairs repair person. You could have knocked me over with a feather when I saw him leap, again with no "lead time" right over the gate and fly up the stairs to see what the repair guy was doing ....there was no stopping him.....My very calm, very nice. very obedient ALD until there was a stranger in the house that he wanted to be next to!!!!
I think it depends on the dogs.... Charlie girl is a standard labradoodle, 45 lb. She has done very well in agility so she can jump. But never ever jumped over the baby gate. ( regular height ) My standard poodle does not jump the gate either ( 50 Lb) I never taught them anything special for this. They just don't jump the gate. But if you are worried, I would go with the tall one just in case....
Most likely she will learn to honor the barriers you put up, but I would go for the higher ones if you haven't purchased yet. Our anxious dog will actually push large pieces of furniture out of the way if he MUST get to the door to greet us, but for the most part all of our dogs honor the typical baby gate height barriers. My daughter's dogs who are not used to barriers do not honor anything we use, and one of them is only 12 pounds!
I think it depends on the dog--helpful, huh? :) Trav is a medium labradoodle, and has always been very conscious of barriers. If a barrier comes up to his chest, he won't try to get over it. He could easily jump over it, as he can jump up onto the bed and such, but he just doesn't try. Maybe if a squirrel ran across the room, he'd change his mind. lol
Not sure how this pricing stacks up against other Web sites, but here is a link to sale Doggyloot is running on Carlson extra-tall gates (I think it's one of the brands our breeder had recommended). $55 instead of $88.

I agree with taller gates....one of my guys is quite a jumper. Interestingly enough now that he's older he has stopped trying to get over the gates....but he used to enjoy "gate jumping".
Tall gates - no temptation to get over them, it also hinders the desire for others to lean over and reach into an area for petting. Kids can't reach over a tall gate.
