The Power of Dogs

I saw this video on the news today and it was so moving that I just had to share.It is about a man who has Alzheimer's Disease and has lost his speech, but when he interacts with his daughter's dog, he is able to formulate words and sentences!  Dogs are such wonderful creatures and it is so amazing what a positive impact they have on people. On another note, children can have the same effect on the elderly. My first grade class visits a senior living center each year and we visit with seniors that have Alzheimer's and Dementia. On one particular visit, some of the children were reading and singing  to some elderly patients who had not spoken in months and they started  to say some words and tried to sing along. It was so moving- even the director from the center who was escorting us around was crying.

I saw this and watched it twice. Amazing. Dogs are nonjudgmental and I think that can be sensed by everyone.I love seeing the therapy dogs come to the hospital and visit. Makes such a difference in our elderly patients than others.

Edited to add: My verb tenses are incorrect in one of my last sentences. Sorry- missed that when I was editing it and changing a word. Should say "They started to say some words and tried to sing along". Don't want anybody to think the first grade teacher has bad grammar. :) Whew...Just  found out that  I could still edit it. :)

Powerful, indeed! In owning two Therapy dogs, I saw first hand how an animal could break through barriers, that mere Doctors and Nurses could not. I was in constant awe.

Isn't this a cool thing.  It is amazing how youngsters and dogs give comfort to those that have become less aware of the 'real' world.

I get tears in my eyes when I hear him say "I'll take (care of) you and you take (care of) me."

This has poignant meaning to me as we are preparing to move my parents out of their home in Fla to live closer to all of us in AZ, due to early stages of dementia, possibly Alzheimers. My step dad is deteriorating quickly and speech is becoming more and more difficult. They hopefully will be totally moved and settled here within the next month. Thank you for this, as I feel my two dogs will bring some joy to them both while they are here.
