Hubby bought and fed my pup Orijen Large Puppy instead of Orijen Puppy!!!!!!!

Hi All!! Hubby was instructed to buy Orijen Puppy and feed the dog (AMOS, my 5 mo mini GD).  He mistakenly bought Orijen Large Puppy and fed it to him already. Aaarrrgghh!!!!  I'm not sure if I should be worried.  Looks like they are pretty similar as far as content and percentages, but I'm still worried.  I read that the Large Puppy would cause him to grow faster than what he is ready for. He is predicted to be no more than 30 lbs, (let's hope).  I can't return now that we opened and used it. If I could return my husband to the store, then I would.........

Should I be worried??  Thanks in advance for any help!!!!

Are you sure you can't return it? Some of our local stores allow you to return open bags of food.

I will look into it. I just assumed that once food was open, it was not returnable. Thanks!!

I have returned food opened several times, you could also email Orijen. I bought Instinct and it didn't agree with my Doodle and emaild them and they said to bring it back where I bought it, I did and was able to exchange it.

I wouldn't be worried. I think the large breed is actually designed to SLOW growth because it's less caloric. I'm feeding my next pup Orijen adult from the get-go I've decided. It's approved for all life stages anyway and my Tenley got fat on Orijen puppy, he was 25% overweight! He is 30lbs too.

Kate is right. Large breed formulas contain fewer calories per cup, and are intended for giant breed dogs who do not reach full skeletal growth until well into their 2nd year,  to keep them from gaining too much weight too fast.

My local store allows returns on opened bags of food and treats. I would try to return it if you are concerned. Also- LBP is designed so they DON'T grow too fast so I think you were misinformed :)

Also- I switched from LBP to regular puppy because Ragley didn't need to be on LBP and I actually wanted the higher calorie formula because Ragley is relatively active and has always been super skinny

Exactly.

I don't think it is a big problem.  Regular Puppy has 490 cals/cup and Large Puppy has 456 cals/cup.  It is not a big difference but the Large Puppy formula is slightly lower calorie.

If you are worried, buy a bag of regular Orijen Puppy and mix the two.  Then it is not wasted.

Mixing is the best idea, I think, so puppy won't get used to the large breed formula

Relax, as everyone has said, the food will absolutely not cause your pup to grow faster (and whoever told you that should stop giving any advice about nutrition or feeding dogs, lol). And you can exchange it for the regular puppy formula, almost any store in the world will do that. If not, it won't hurt him, (hopefully it's not a thirty lb bag) but you will have to feed more of it to be sure he gets enough calories and nutrients (especially fats) , as smaller breeds need more calories per lb than large breeds.
