Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I got my 6 month old mini labradoodle 2 bully sticks from Best Bully Sticks.  She gobbles them down pretty quickly!  From what I have read on here, they can last for weeks.  If I let her, I think it would be gone in a day or two.

So do people just limit how much their dog chews, or is mine just a really fast chewer?

How many sticks do you give your dog, and how often?

Thanks!

First, all bully sticks are not created equal. There are some that last days in our house and others can be gone in 20 minutes. Be aware that bully sticks are very " fatty" and may have some negative results on the digestive system. While they don't appear to effect Enzo in any way, I still limit her to just one or 2 a week ,depending how busy I want to keep her.

All dogs are different in this respect. I am always amazed when people say their dogs have a bully stick for days or weeks, because JD used to demolish the biggest ones in minutes. There's no point to a chew object that doesn't last and occupy your dog for a reasonable amount of time, so bully sticks are not for us, and they may not be for you, either. :)

I stopped giving Mojo bully sticks, they upset his tummy, instead I give him a kong filled with a mix of banana, peanut butter and plain yogurt or replace peanut butter with a yam and freeze it. He loves it and it keeps him busy. I do this about 3 times a week and if more will give him a bit less of his kibble.

Lexi can polish off a bully within minutes ... and then her stomach is upset. We gave up on them. The Whimzees last a lot longer (those are potato-based teeth cleaners), and we give her a trachea (at Karen's suggestion) about once every week or so. Those are much cheaper - although a little slimy - and harder to devour. The Himalayan Yak bars are another good choice, although recently Lexi has been chewing them down within days. ($20 a stick is way too expensive for that.), so I've even cut down on those. I give it to her for about 20 minutes then take it away.

Enzo loves the Himalayan Yak chews. Our problem is, she loves to " toss" them in the air. They crash down on the Terrazzo floors and break! And I won't let her have a small piece...like you said too expensive to being throwing pieces away. :(. But they at least last, with her, anyway.

I hear you can put the pieces of Himalayan Yak chews in a microwave and they puff up into a crispy treat, I never tried because I don't use microwaves but am saving the pieces to try when I visit my daughter who has a microwave. Mojo tosses them also and they break on our stone floor.

Don't burn them, it took me three days to get the stink out of my house. :>)

TY I never used a microwave but will go slow and have it on low.

OMD! The smell is not all that wonderful to begin with, I can not imagine what a burnt Yak chew smells like!
But it may be worth the shot...I cringe every time I throw a piece away!
Thanks for the info!

I agree that you don't want her to have too many of these.  We don't get them at all any more.  We like Kongs and also the Honest Kitchen Beams.  These are dried catfish skins and very popular at my house.  They don't last a super long time, just a few minutes, but at least they are somewhat healthy.  We also use real bones.
