I'm FINALLY signing my girls up for pupsurance. I've chosen healthy paws for a variety of reasons and they're both getting a 90% reimbursement with a $250 yearly deductible. I know that office visits aren't covered, but I'm looking for anything else that is a NEED TO KNOW about healthy paws. I'm not really interested in other coverage companies. I know we have a lot of pleased Petplan customers here on DK, but I don't like that even though they factor in the office visit for your copay, they only reimburse at 80% for specialists no matter what plan you have.

So please sound off, I would love to hear stories good or bad about your experiences with healthy paws.

One last question, our George is now 10 months old (I know I waited way too long to do this) she hasn't been to the vet for an exam since she was spayed.. Will she need a well dog visit or something before coverage?

Thank you to everyone in advance. All the old discussions I've read through have helped me so much already in making a good decision for our family. :)

I have no feedback to offer as far as the company you've selected, but I want to say good for you for getting insurance!

I wish everyone would, even if their dogs are a lot older than George.

Margot has Healthy Paws. I took her to the vet during the waiting period. Just know that anything the she had before coverage or during the waiting period may be considered a pre-exisiting condition. She tested positive for Giarida. Since we found out during the waiting period that illness won't be covered and I'm guessing she won't be covered in the future if she gets Giardia again. I'll let you know of any updates.

Poor Margot! Luckily our girls are 10 and 4 months old, they've both had a few fecals, but giardia is always a risk with dirty or stagnant water and my girls love to swim in lakes and ponds! :)

She tested negative today! :D I was a little nervous since she wasn't eating much when I had to put meds on her plate. She never had bloody poo, but she did go on both Pancur and Metro. I finally figured out she loved cheddar so I swiped and dotted the plate and her kibble with a tiny bit of cheese. I also found out she loved a bit of yogurt with her kibble. Now she's eating all her food sans yogurt/cheese! Might be a combo of no more giardia and her knowing I'll take away her food if she doesn't eat it right away.

Also, since George had a vet visit within 12 months and is less than 6 yo, he shouldn't need another vet visit. Just contact your vet's office to fax/e-mail/mail his records to them.

I'm so happy Margot is free and clear on this giardia issue! Thank you for the information as well!

We have Healthy Paws for Truffle (who's now a year old). I've been pleased so far.  He hasn't had any major problems (YAY!), but the two times we submitted for reimbursement, our requests were quickly processed.  The first time was due to a complication from his neuter surgery.  The silly puppy got to his stitches and had to be sewn up again. Interestingly enough, when I called customer service to ask if it would be covered, they told me it wouldn't be eligible under the policy because it resulted from an excluded procedure (the neuter). But surprisingly enough, they decided to cover it for us!  The second reimbursement was simply for some ear drops.  Also, just know that office visits related to an illness are not covered, either (not just well visits).  So, if you bring your pup in and she is diagnosed with an illness, the visit itself won't be covered (procedures and medication will be, however), nor will any follow-up office visits related to the condition.  I didn't realize that at first.

As for George, Healthy Paws will need all of her medical records in order to process the first claim, just like they would for any new canine customer. Not sure if an actual exam by the vet will be required if you send complete records - you should ask them.

Good luck!

That's awesome that they covered the extra stitches!!
I'm okay with ALWAYS paying for the visit, I understand that with petplan subsequent visits for the same issue would be covered under the first deductable, but in all honestly we don't see the vet much and when we do we go crazy with tests and what not. And I really can't get over paying for 90 or 100% coverage to have it automatically drop to 80% if we have a serious problem and need to see a specialist. And I don't know of any pre existing conditions, that's why I'm hoping we don't have to get an exam...she hasn't been to the vet except for weighing in MONTHS.

I have healthy paws and they have been great.. only submitted a few little things and got reimbursed every time and quickly too! :)

I have Healthy Paws and they have been great to work with over the last three years.

Signed the girls up for healthy paws today. Didn't know that they have an app! Super convenient. :)
