Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi all,
I have a F1 Goldendoodlemand was wondering when he starts to shed his puppy coat? He is now 5 months and his coat is very scraggly and wavy. I was wondering if his coat will grow longer after he sheds his puppy coat?
Also, does anyone's goldendoodle shed? If so, do they tend to grow out of it or is it wishful thinking? I was told that most Goldendoodles don't shed.

Anyone's input will be helpful!

Hi, Audrey. I am no expert in anything doodle. My Bentley is 6 1/2 mos. old. So far he doesn't shed, but I am waiting for him to go thru a coat change. I think they blow their puppy coat around this time. Many doodles do shed, some shed only a little, and some not at all. Bentley's coat was very scraggly, and got his first real haircut right before Christmas. I started him at the groomers in September with a bath, and face trim, ears, and nails to get him used to it. He went about 3 times before his full groom. What I have noticed, is his hair is coming in a little thicker now. I was worried he was going to have a rat tail forever, but that is filling out, also. I don't know how different his full adult coat will become. I hope that helps.
I forgot to mention, Benley is also a F1 goldendoodle.
Hi Debbie,
Thanks for the advice! It's very helpful and encouraging!

Every doodle is different so it is hard to tell when they might go through the coat change. I think they can even do it in stages. Beowoof went through a change at 10 months and then started another stage at 13 months that is ongoing. I've just kept him clipped short in hopes that this too shall pass. LOL!  With mixed breeds it's hard to predict what will happen.

A great resource for coat questions is the Doodle Grooming group:

There is a lot of information in that group and tons of posts with the same questions as yours. Hang in there! Otis is such a doll!

Grooming tips are very helpful!
Is Beowoof's coat more wavy or curly?

Beowoof has a tightly curled poodle coat. When he was a pup it was shaggy and I was so worried he would have no curls. Lol! Be careful what you wish for. :-)

I am still trying to learn how to groom him myself. I groom all four of my miniature schnauzers. (I've been doing the schnauzer cut for 14 years so it's muscle memory at this point.) For some reason I have a tough time with Beowoof's curls. I can trim his ears, face, tail and head myself but have trouble with his body and legs. The groomer I take him to brushes him out, bathes him and then gives him a blow out to get his hair fluffy rather than curly. Then she can trim him. He is such a sweetheart about it and is super patient. One day I will conquer my curly dog fears!

OMD, what an adorable pup!  My experience tells me that if they shed as little puppies, it won't go away.  Some puppies who don't shed when little, shed at the coat change and pretty much not after that.  My son's doodle turned a year old in December and just began shedding.  Sadly, we don't think it will be temporary, but we can always hope.  One of my doodles doesn't shed and one sheds as much as a retriever.

Hmmm  glitch in the posting.

Junior at about 5 months:

And at a year:He had one very bad haircut where they cut off his facial furnishings and shaved his ears.  He is still growing out some but I don't know if he will keep the scruffy look.  His coat has lots of waves and is poodle thick.  So far he doesn't mat, but Iike I said, he just began shedding.

Nancy,
Boy Junior looks so different. What a cutey though!
Hi! While I don't have a goldendoodle, mine is a bernedoodle he started to shed lightly around 5 months but then when he was 7 and 8months old he was shedding a ton! He's almost ten months now and I think we are through the thick of things because he mostly has a soft curly coat and is back to being practically non-shedding. Obviously he is still young and this could change. Good family friends of ours have a golden doodle and they said that theirs is non shedding but when he lost his puppy coat he lost it in two stages, once around 7 months and then again just before he was 1 year old. He's 5 or 6 now, I can't remember and is low to no shedding. Hope this helps :)
I may be wrong, but I would say that most F1 doodles do shed. It all depends on the percentage of poodle to golden or lab genes that they end up with. Some F1s shed as much as goldens and labs, some a bit less, and some not at all.

We have had two standard F1 goldendoodles and neither one of them shed and neither one of them had a coat change.  With our first goldendoodle, Zak, we had no idea what a goldendoodle was.  We didn't know about the coat types, shedding or anything.  We were so surprised that there was no shedding and then we didn't realize that her coat would keep growing unless we clipped her.  Then, with some research, we realized that if a dog doesn't shed, she needs to be clipped - how dumb were we????  She died at the age of five of EPI and then we got Myla.  I lived on this site while waiting for her and then learned about the coat types, matting, shedding etc.  I was prepared to have a coat change but again, we never had one.  Myla's coat has always been soft and wavy and when cut short, more curly.  She has never shed but does mat, mostly on her underarms and belly when her coat is longer.  Because she does a lot of swimming and goes snowshoeing quite regularly, we clip her quite short so that we don't have to deal with the mats as she does not like being brushed...at all..  This is the beauty of doodles - they are all different!!!!  Have fun!!!!

Here is Beowoof at five months. He is in the shaggy phase at this point:

Full-on shagfest at 9 months. We got him clipped not long after this picture.

13 months old and full of curls:
