For the most part, Ace is good here at home with us. He has his zoomie moments, usually around 6pm, but we anticipate that. When he gets too excited at home we can curb his behavior with some treats and training. The problem is when other people are around. There is no controlling this guy. When we go to the vet, he goes from 0 to 100 immediately. When someone comes to our house same thing, 0 to 100.
Today, we had a fence guy come to give us an estimate. The guy came at the same time as potty time. Ace went nuts. Not in an aggressive mean way, but jumping and licking the guy and not listening to our commands. He completely forgot about going potty. Since has always been afraid to go down stairs, I told my daughters to take him up on the deck so the guy can do his work and give me an estimate. They brought Ace up to the deck and for the first time since we've had him, he RAN down the steps as if he was going down steps out of the womb. We were all amazed that he did that, but that's just how amped up he gets. I tried the whole forget about the guy and focus on the puppy thing, getting him to sit and lie down then treat, but he would not stay. He went right back to jumping on the guy. My daughters and I were all flustered. Perhaps we should have brought him back inside and put him in time out, but we wanted him to pee.
Any advice?

I hate to bum you out but Auggie at 2 1/2 is still that same way. So calm most of the time unless we get visitors and then he is all over them. It is frustrating for sure.
My two are loonies when it comes to visitors. I have taught them to go into the bedroom to calm down. It is the best I can do...
No advice, I can just relate. Although it is not as bad now that he is six, we have never perfected the greet. All dogs are not perfect, and certainly this is one of my dog's ( and mine) biggest flaws. I work with it but I have also accepted it too
For so many reasons, I love; my dog's ZEST and LOVE of life. In this instance though, it is the drawback. It is a trade off for us. I'll take it :)
I totally get what you are saying. Lola is 7 months old and no lie, when people come over or we are out and a stranger comes up to pet her she gets so excited she is jumping up on them and running around them in circles. I swear people must think we keep her caged up and then when they get here we set her free. On the other hand when she is here with our family and we are just going about our normal day she is mellow and just hanging around except when we are playing with her of course. She will get so excited she will pee herself and it has happened twice at petsmart that she actually pee'd on the poor people who came up to pet her. I try to explain that she is just excited but still I feel terrible when she does it. I always say to her, "Lola, your enthusiasm is turning people off!" I can see the point with the leash thing when the guy came over and we are lucky that Lola is a mini because I can't imagine is she were a standard and I had to try and control her. Sadly I don't have any advice for you but I wanted you to know that believe me, you are not alone. We just paid $120.00 for a puppy training class that lasted 5 weeks and because she would get so excited we flunked the class :-(
Ohhh, I can so relate! Winnie used to be such a maniac when people came over. Now 1 year old, she still is, but not as bad. Part of the problem is that we don't have children coming and going, and we don't entertain at our house very often. So when we DO have people over, it is a very exciting event! :-) I always have her training collar on her, and keep her on a leash. Visitors are given strict instructions to try to ignore her until she calms down. Not easy when you have a cute fluff ball trying to jump all overall! Usually after about 10 min. or so, she has calmed herself down enough that I can drop her leash and go about my business- stepping on it if she decides to jump again.
There are times, though, when we decide to forgo any "teachable moments." Yesterday was a prime example- we had a window estimator come over after work and I knew it was going to be a frustrating situation with Winnie. So, she stayed out in the car, happily chewing a bone... win/win....
I feel for you, my guy has excitement issues when people come over too. He has mostly got over the jumping, but he literally whistles and quivers with excitement. I still work at this all the time. Max is a year and a half. By the way he acts you would think he was neglected by us! (He is not of course, but boy does he get excited.) Good luck with getting him to calm down!
