Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Completly out of curiosity but has anyone noticed a correlation to their doodles body type and coat type? For example both of my doodles are f1 bernedoodles and Loki the older of the two has a more poodle build to him and Moose the younger is much more solid and built more like a berner. Also Loki has a very poodle like coat and doesn't shed. Moose on the other hand has a much flatter coat- he's only 8 weeks so too early to tell what his coat will end up like. Just curious what other people have seen. I know it's a complete gamble :)

I honestly don't think there is any correlation at all between body type and coat. But JD is built entirely like a Lab, big-boned, heavy-boned, broad...no sign of Poodle anywhere, and he has a long, silky, straight, heavily shedding coat, nothing like a Poodle's at all.

I would agree with Karen. I don't think there is any correlation between body type and coat. Enzo is all poodle body...thin and slim....but all fluff. Her coat is not curly at all, but does not shed. Well.....at least, no more than I do! She is a F1 Goldendoodle.

There doesn't appear to be a correlation with my 2, at least not with Oscar. Lucy (F1b Labradoodle) has more of a Poodle body and coat (very coarse with a tight curl). She seems to fit the norm for Poodle body type and coat type. Oscar, OTOH, is a multi-gen Labradoodle and he has a sturdy Lab body with a deep chest, but his coat is very soft with abundant curls (although not tight curls like Lucy). Its hard to tell which sheds more. Oscar is more itchy than Lucy, so a lot of his hair loss comes from scratching. Lucy doesn't shed per se, but she does lose some hair after baths (like people). I don't normally find hair on my clothes, and certainly I don't notice any hair flying when petting them, but I inevitably find doodle dust bunnies drifting around the perimeter of rooms.

My F2 has a really deep chest and tiny waist like a poodle. She has a very thick tight coat. She is literally indistinguishable from a standard poodle.

Those two traits count for entirely separate genes, so there is not correlation. However, the probability between parents will vary. A F1b for example will have a higher chance of having the slim poodle body.

Orwell is a F2b and he has the poodle body all the way, but his hair should be more tightly curled if I wanted him to pass off as a poodle. Sometimes I don't see any lab in him at all... his face is the only indication that he has lab in him.

By the way, Orwell had a pretty straight coat at that age... he definitely ended up curlier than I would have thought.
