I'm wondering if folks can comment on Nexgard, which just works if the tick bites the dog, versus Frontline Plus, versus Frontline Tritak, which seems to repel ticks but also has the greatest number of chemicals.  I've found some older threads on the topic, but now that Nexgard and Tritak have been on the market for a bit, I wanted to see what folks' experiences were.  We live in a highly tick endemic area, I currently have Lyme disease, and I want to ensure the tick is killed when it's on my dog's fur, and not just if it reaches the skin and bites the dog (unless it can travel there very quickly.)  Thanks for any guidance/feedback you can share.

I'm sorry I can't help you with Nexgard, but we live in the woods with lots of deer and use Advantix II.
We have never found one tick on either of our dogs. Also, we have never experienced any type of reaction to the product.
My vet recommended Advantix II to prevent the ticks and other nasties biting, but I got scared off by all the reports of adverse reactions and decided to stick with Revolution - no good for you though because they have to bite for it to work.

I've never tried the products that you mentioned but I used Advantix II on my dog for 3 years. She had tons of ticks. Literally 2-3 a week in the spring and fall.  I have both my dogs wearing the Seresto collar and have not seen a tick in the year they have been wearing them.

We use Vectra 3D. It repels and kills them if they do happen to bite. It works for fleas and mosquitoes too.

What does your vet recommend?

Hi Lyndy, Our vet recommends the Frontline Tritak. We put it on Sophie last night without incident; so hopefully she will be okay with it. If she has any reaction to it or it doesn't work well, we'll try one or more of what everyone has mentioned; I really appreciate the feedback.

A few years back, I had bought some flea preventative from Walmart. The reaction happened almost immediately with my schnoodle. He foamed at the mouth, shook his head, and walked funny. I was very scared and washed him with dawn dish soap (as per recommendations that I read online). He cleared up within 30 mins of having the bath. I felt so bad.
A friend of mine just administered vectra 3d to her dog and her reaction was to immediately vomit. I would think that if your pup was going to react it would be immediately.

We live in Massachusetts and spend a lot of time on the Cape where ticks are abundant. After using topical flea and tick products for years, I switched about six months ago to Nexguard. It is so much easier to give my guys a chewable tablet than to apply the chemical solution to them. So far, Nexguard has been great -- both in terms of ease and in protection. Neither of my dogs have had any reaction whatsoever. If you choose to use a topical, Advantix II worked significantly better than Frontline.
