Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Raven is 3.5 months old and is shedding bad. I thought the f1b's didn't shed. Any ideas?

Unfortunately not all F1b's are non-shedders. With a mixed breed it really is the luck of the draw. It looks like your little cutie got more of the Golden or Lab traits. I have one like that as well but her sweet personality more than makes up for it!
Wanda, is one of Raven's parents a purebred Poodle and the other parent a doodle?
Lori is right. Although an F1B has a higher chance of not shedding, with mixed breeds in which there are heavily shedding dogs like retrievers involved, there are no guarantees. You only get that guarantee with purebreds that always breed true.
She ended up with more retriever genes is all it is. The way genetics works is not the mathematical formula we try to box it in as. Put a few different colored marbles in a jar and what you pull out over all can be mathematically calculated but each pull itself is individual.
I have and F1B (75% poodle) and he sheds like crazy too. Out of nine puppies, of course, he is the only one that sheds. He is also the only puppy that took on a more retriever look. I chose him because he was very wavy and doodley as a small puppy. Then all of a sudden, his looks began to change (you can see his progression in my photos). We notice that it is his fuzzy top coat that is shedding, but he has this coarse, curly undercoat. I have no idea if he will always be a shedder or if he will indeed take on that curly coat that we see underneath all of that puppy fuzz. We brought him home at 7 weeks. He'll is 4 months old now. He's been shedding since the day we got him. Only time will tell I guess, what kind of coat he'll end up with.
Oh, wishful thinking, I'm afraid...Thank goodness they're so cute!
