Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi all!

So I will be moving in about a month which I am very excited about, much nicer place and wayyyy more space for the dogs so they should love that! Does anyone have any experience with moving and helping their doodles adjust? Who knows maybe they won't care at all but I would like to be prepared. they both have their "comfort corners" of our current space and both have settled into nice routines and I want to do as much as I can to easy the transition, I was thinking of having them stay with my friend on moving day and bring them over after all their stuff is already there that way they would at least have familiar smells. I figured I could bring them both over at the same time since they are practically glued to each other's hip these days. Loki, the older of my doodles, is the more anxious of the two so it's him that I'm more concerned about. Although since getting the puppy he has relaxed a ton so maybe this will be no big deal to him.

Thanks for your help! Oh and here's a picture of them!

Your Doodles are beautiful.  I think it's a great idea to have your friend keep them during the actual move.  If you have their beds and toys in the new house when you bring them to their new home, I think everything should be fine.

Thank you :)
We moved very recently. I could tell the doods were a little stressed with all the extra activity that went with it. But once we settled in our new place, they did fine. Same toys, same doggy beds, etc. For sure let them stay somewhere else if you can on move day.
Thanks!
We moved last year when Riley was 16 months old. While we had good intentions of taking her to the new house a few times before the move, things got so crazy we didn't get a chance. We crated her in the bedroom at our old house the day of the move. Once everything settled down, we took her to the new house that night. She is usually really adaptable so we didn't think it would be an issue. Surprisingly, it was unsettling for her. That first night she wouldn't let us out of her sight. More than the normal doodle affection. She has never been a barker and she started barking at everyone that went by outside. It was like she was on constant alert keeping an eye out to protect us. It took a couple months but she settled down. We didn't do anything special, only because there really wasn't much we could do. When she would bark, we would thank her calmly. We tried to let her know we were still in charge and would take care of intruders. It just took some time for her to get used to the sights and sounds.

I'm sure your doodles will pick up on your vibe that all is well and will settle in quickly. If I did it again, I would have taken her over a few times to make the transition less abrupt. That probably was our biggest mistake. Congrats on the move!
Thanks! do you think taking them for walking through the neighborhood would be helpful? So something is familiar to them? We go for a ton of walks so I don't see why it would be a bad idea, just not sure if it would be helpful I guess.
I think that's a great idea!

Sounds like you have a good plan.  When we moved into our new home, I did not feel like it was really our home for a week or so.  So maybe it will be that way for your doodles, but I would bet they will settle in rather quickly once they see their beds, etc.  Good luck on your move.

Thank you! I'm hoping it goes well for them and they find their new "comfort areas" quickly, they both hate their crates and instead find little quiet areas to rest, the puppy is obviously still crated but would rather sleep/relax in a corner or under a side table when stressed. Doodles are funny!

Moving is stressful for some dogs. Resist the urge to wash "their stuff" for the new house, their smell will comfort them.

Staying at a friend's house for moving day is awesome.

I would personally put both on a long line a keep them with me for at least two weeks, to prevent marking, trying to run away, and just plain investigating without me around to let them now what they could stick their noses into.  after two weeks you will have a good idea that they are okay.  If you are uncertain add a week, it can't hurt

Oh good idea! I'm always on "high alert" for running away when we are outside because we live downtown so there are just too many bad things that could happen but that's probably a good idea to let them adjust like that inside too, thanks!
