Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I may be out of line on a doodle board and if so will gladly delete this post. On the off chance that I am not, here is the situation. A friend of mine is currently sitting in Tennessee for the indefinite future. Her son was hit by a car, while on his bicycle, 19 days ago and still in very serious condition. They are just now trying to wake him some and this goes in layers, gain a bit, lose a bit. If you have ever known anyone with a serious brain injury you probably can relate to what they are going through. Another friend of her's has reached out about the son's dog. He lives with the mom in Newburgh, Indiana and because every one is in Tennessee focused on the son there are just people coming in sporadically to help with the dog. Poor thing is having some separation anxiety at this time and won't eat, has even chewed on a few things (not his norm). The veterinarian looked him over and gave a med to settle him some and help his appetite along.
While we are looking for solutions it came to me that there might be someone on this board that would be willing to foster him for a bit, might live near there. His name is Sonny, he is a Doberman mix, lovable, I have heard the mother talk of walking him so I am assuming he is good on a leash, she is an avid walkers. Oh, he also sleeps in his crate (gate open) so I am assuming he would not have any problem going into a crate when necessary. Another woman trying to help refers to him as most lovable and the type that likes to lean into you for a good scratch or cuddle.
If anyone is willing to help or has suggestions for solutions please contact me.
I know this is a long shot but hoping to help the dog as well as the mother, who has way too much on her mind already.
Sonny is settled in with a neighbor and their furbaby for at least the next few weeks, hopefully this will settle into the only foster home he needs until his family has time to focus on him again. The son has been taken off of the paralytic drug, they are working on weaning him off of some other strong drugs that are affecting his liver and lungs, hopefully they will put the bone back in his skull soon and things will continue to progress. He has fluttered his eyes open twice now and twice given a brief 'thumbs up' when the nurse asked him to. His family is thrilled with any baby step at this point and keeping their faith strong. Thank you for the responses and prayers.

I have been that Mom with a child with a serious brain injury in a coma so I do understand and it is a most horrible place to be. If I were nearer I would happily take this dog who needs a temporary foster home right now. The poor dog must be very confused. I hope you manage to find a foster home. Please convey my wishes to her and tell her to have patience and faith please and to very firmly stay in the moment if at all possible. And by the way coming out of coma is nothing like what you see on the TV. It is an incredibly slow and frightening process to watch.
Thank you for your positive thoughts and kind response. They have a long way to go and I am hoping we can take some of the burden off their shoulders.
You might also look into area rescues who might have foster homes and would be willing to help. Here's a link that might help http://www.pinschofheavenrescue.com/home.html. Fingers and paws crossed that all works out for this Mom and her son as well as the dog.
Thank you for this link. I will be getting with the lady that lives near there later today and see that she gets this. I am actually considering a drive down and bringing the dog back to my home, it is a bit of drive but if they don't mind Sonny being farther from home, well... My only problem is I have a couple of times I have to be gone over the next month, hubby is retired but just committed to helping someone out for a month and we may not be the best place right now if we can't work that out. Will talk to him this evening and see what he thinks. Poor guy just really needs some help while this is going on.
I am too far away to help with the dog, but I would like to send my prayers for their son.
Is there a doberman rescue you can contact? They might have fosters in the area.
The problem with contacting a Doberman rescue (or any kind of rescue, really) is that fosters are in very short supply and there are usually not enough of them for the dogs who are ownerless and homeless and at risk of being put down. I don't know of any legitimate rescue group for any breed that would have the resources to temporarily house a dog for someone. There is also a liability issue with a dog who has not been signed over to the rescue and is therefore not legally owned by the rescue group. If the dog gets hurt or sick, or injures someone, who is responsible? Rescues take these kinds of things very seriously, they have to. But of course, there's no harm in asking.
I'll be keeping your friend and her son in my thoughts and hoping for the best possible outcome.
This is all good news, thank you for the update.
This is great news for the family and the dog. Thank you for this update. And please update us again.
Glad things are improving for the family, including Sonny. Continued prayers!
