Sorry, I know a while back this story wouldn't go away, but check out this story that came out today on the Huffington Post. Apparently, Obama said something this morning on ABC.
Hmmm. I think they may have an even more difficult task to find a Portuguese Water Dog in a shelter. Labradoodles are not the normal dog to find in a shelter, but PWD would be even more unusual.
There is a story listed on the USA Today headlines about this and they quote a breeder in New Jersey ( Melissa Angelini) about labradoodles that is a bit misleading and will lead to a lot of disappointed doodle buyers. I've included the link--but she basically says that there are two coats, fleecy and curly and that they don't shed--maybe she was misquoted, but it seems unfair to all the doodles out there who shed a little and are rejected by their new owners. Its in the sidebar under the picture of a VERY CUTE labradoodle! The article leans towards labradoodles being a better choice than PWDs though! http://www.usatoday.com/life/lifestyle/2009-01-11-obama-dog_N.htm?c...
I am watching the whole president's dog hysteria story with a smirk from Europe and am at the same time worried that more Doodles are produced in puppy mills and that the prices will rise ridiculously.
I have looked at the mentioned story and somehow the Labradoodle on the picture looked familiar to me.
As I am browsing every now and then through Doodle (Breeder) homepages and I think the dog in the story looks exactly like Savannah on this homepage:
Pigmentation of nose & lips looks different to me, but that could be the lighting. The doodle in the story seems to have a straighter, wirier coat...but so many of our doodles DO look alike, it's hard to tell. Cute doodles, though.
Well, if they're definitely getting a shelter dog, then they're getting a labradoodle; out of 177,523 dogs listed on petfinder, there are 3 possible PWD mixes. You can look at the Doodles In need group to see how many dozens of doodles are available for adoption.
It's a little bit troubling that they obviously haven't researched this much; he called it a Portuguese Water HOUND!
Any Portie owner will tell you that they are absolutely hell on wheels during their first year; definitely not a breed for a first time dog owner. And clearly the Obamas believe the non-shedding myth...I agree with Ginny that it's unfortunate that that breeder made such a statement publicly. All of this will only lead to more homeless doodles.
To me, this seems like another case where a poodle would have the best choice, but there's that anti-poodle prejudice again. Oh well, we can only hope for the best. I hope the girls will be thrilled with their new dog.
No, it's NOT a hound, LOL! You're right, they're in the working group. That's what i was commenting on above...that our prez-elect didn't get the name right! They're called Portuguese Water DOGS.
