Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I feel like the worst doodle momma this evening. I took my 12 week old mini-goldendoodle for his usual afternoon leashed walk and we saw another leashed dog being walked by a friend in my business complex. The vet has been encouraging me to begin socializing and we've been doing that alot over the past few weeks and Lambeau, my doodle has been doing great!. The dog was fine and then we turned to go back to my office and the other dog attacked Lambeau out of nowhere! He was a beagle/terrier mix. He bit him 3 times which one of the bites in his leg cursed his bone to break and then he latched himself onto the back of my doodle's neck and I physically was pulling the dog off my Lambeau. long story short Lambeau is in the ICU this evening awaiting surgery for his leg tomorrow. Good news is there is no spinal damage and he is being pumped full of antibiotics to resist infection. Have any of you experienced anything like this or a broken leg in a small puppy? What types of things should we be looking at in terms of recovery?

Oh I am so very sorry!   Horrible HORRIBLE thing to happen

I hope you called the police. People are responsible for their dog's behavior and I think they need to pay all the expenses

Oh My Gosh! I am outraged for you!!! I am so sorry that you and Lambeau have to go through this. Its just awful! I certainly hope the other owner is planning on paying your vet bill at the very least??! Poor sweet Lambeau. I know you and he must have been terrified! I have no advice since I have not had any experience with this but I will pray for a speedy recovery!

I'm so sorry this happened to you and Lambeau. I hope his surgery goes well and he has a quick recovery.

I have no experience with broken bones but I am so sorry this happened to you! I would call the police or at least file some kind of report though so there is a paper trail, that way if you ever need to go back to it, it's there.  I hope you guys both get some sleep and that he has a speedy recovery! Hugs and prayers for you and Lambeau!

I'm so sorry that this happened.  It must have been frightening. I hope all goes well and that Lambeau recovers quickly.

Years ago, our 8-9 week old yellow lab puppy had been home with us for about a week when my husband came off a ladder & stepped on him & broke his rear leg.  We took him to an emergency vet who put a temporary cast on it until the following Monday when our regular vet re-casted it.  As I remember, the cast covered his entire leg & came up around his back.

He managed to hobble around on it without much trouble...the main challenge was keeping the cast clean & dry.  The best thing we found were baby socks...they came up to cover his whole leg & kept the cast clean.  We put a plastic bag around it & held it on with a rubber band when he went outside to go potty.  The puppy was very needy & wanted to be held a lot.

We all got used to the routine after a few days.  I think the cast needed to be changed at least once.  His leg healed perfectly & he lived a great life until he was 13+.

You must have been frantic when this happened...so sorry for both you & Lambeau.   Did the other owner try to intervene ?..sure hope they're responsible enough to keep that dog away from others in the future.

Thank you so much for the advice regarding the cast! That helps give us an idea of what to expect. Lambeau loved to be snuggled and held prior to the incident so I'm definitely anticipating more of that when he comes home ;). I'm so happy to hear your lab moved on and lived a wonderful life!

I'm so sorry to hear about this horrible attack on Lambeau. It just makes my blood boil. I too hope the owner is going to step up and take financial responsibility for her dog but I'm sure you're just mainly concerned about your baby right now.  He is just adorable!  Our prayers that his surgery goes smoothly and his recovery is fast.

Oh, and please do not blame yourself for this! There's no way you could have foreseen what happened and it's all on the other dog owner IMHO!

I am so sorry to hear this Megan.  I am sure you were scared to death and your poor little doodle was too!  Was the other dog on a leash?  Obviously your "friend" did not have control over her dog.  I hope she will do the right thing and pay all your vet expenses.  Charlie and I were attacked by two dogs which came out of nowhere behind us.  It was a nightmare. I hurt my knee, and fortunately Charlie just got a scratch on his behind, but it scared us both to death.  I called the police and reported it.  After Lambeau heals, it might be a better plan to have play sessions with dogs you know are safe.  Unfortunately, I would definitely not trust your friends dog under any circumstances.  Praying for a very speedy recovery for cute little doodle.

Oh no!  I am so sorry to hear of this awful incident. I wonder if that dog has exhibited aggressive behavior in the past? I hope Lambeau will come through surgery well.  Did he have damage to his neck?  That kind of thing terrifies me.  My husband and I were taking our 2 doodles for a walk 3 weeks ago, and along the trail was a large dog, all alone, staring us down.  He then ran toward Melody and Morgan, who are small dogs in comparison to him. The dog sniffed at first and then tried pushing them both down the road. My husband and I each picked up one of our dogs and carried them home, which was not far. I think the dog was part Pit bull, but I don't know what else...it was pretty big. We have no idea who the dog belongs to, and neither do our neighbors. Thankfully he did not attack us, or do anything more than push them, but it sure made my heart race. He tried to get through our fence and then our neighbor's fence, but we had our gates closed. Please keep us posted on Lambeau...bless your hearts.
