Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

(Whoops! Just figured out I could add a discussion versus commenting on everything! Haha. Sorry for the posts!)

Hi everyone! My husband and I are adopting a DOOD in hopefully the next few weeks.... and we're really hoping we can find a puppy with a "flat coat" retriever look. Just like all of yours! they are so cute, we just love that look. Is it rare to find?

Do you know if the breeders will know right away if a puppy will have that flat golden look?

We have been speaking to one out of state breeder in Ohio, they showed us the photos below of an adorable little guy who's available, but its so hard to tell what their coat will be -- and to trust someone out of state! Eek!

If anyone knows how to find a retriever looking doodle (light on the poodle! haha) Please let us know!

Don't want to miss out on this little guy below but out of state is tricky!

Wrigley is still so handsome!

From what I've read your chances of having a flat coat - not shaggy or wavy - actually is with the f2. You get shaggy, wiry, wavy with f1 (generally).

Yep.  I could attest to that.:)

What you are looking for is actually called an "open-face" Doodle. Thats what its called when they have no facial furnishings (mustache  or beard). I have one (a mini), but she was little older when we got her so I knew exactly what I was getting. With a puppy it is hard to know. Just looking at the adorable face in the photo, I think I do see that "chrysanthemum' of facial fur which will grow as he gets older. It is true that the F2 has the greatest chance of producing the open face but not always reliable. The following was taken from another discussion here on DK. You can also search "facial furnishings" or "open face" and you can read some past discussions.

The gene for the beard, eyebrows, and that "chrysanthemum" of hair on the muzzle is separate from the gene for a curly coat, so there are dogs who have a curly coat and do not shed, but still have the smooth face, also called an "open" face.

Thanks for sending this! Open faced is definitely what we want. Just not sure if this guy has it or not, so hard to tell especially out of state! Thoughts?

The first pic is Bode at 6 weeks. He s actually flatter now than he was then. The second was taken at 7 mos.

Thanks for sending!!

Bode is so cute!! I dont think the pic of him at 6 weeks posted, did you post it here?

Thx! Sorry! I think they glammed him up for the pic. He was never that fluffy! You shd share your concerns with the kennel. I think they hv pros (geneticists?) on staff that deal with this specifically.
