Murphy has always had a few large freckles on his back. I've been observing them for 7 years and none have changed. However, today during a bath, I noticed a bunch of various sized new freckles all over his back.  These are new, within the last 4-6 months. His hair has been long for most of that time, so maybe I missed them, but he was recently groomed and I just bathed him again and that's when I noticed.

Does your doodle have freckles? And if so have the number of them changed? Do dogs get "age spots" like we do?  I see the Vet in 2 weeks for his annual and Vac's so will ask then too.

I'll be interested in what your vet has to say.

It doesn't appear that we've had any discussion about this. Many other skin issues, but not dark spots on the back. Murphy is very pale skinned. I hope it similar to what human redheads/pale skinned people experience when they are in the sun and just what it looks like, freckles.  I will let you know. Somehow I don't think she will want to biopsy, but I don't know what skin problems this could be a sign of either.

Hmmm. Interesting. No I haven't seen any

I have watched my "redhead"'s rose nose get very freckled over the years--she is nine--and she has other freckles too--I understand that there is no harm to dark spots on the skin--but ask your vet to be sure.

I also have been checking their noses as I do fear sun damage/skin cancer since they are in the hot Az sun a lot. But no nose freckles so far. I will ask about his freckles, just to have them noted for a baseline though.

Same spots on my dogs' noses.

I am going to text my groomer and ask her what she notices on the doodles that she grooms.

Thanks for checking Nancy.

My groomer said she sees more skin pigment spots in her poodle and poodle mixes; more common in white dogs; darken a little with age.

It seems this is pretty common then and probably age related. I've never found any on Bella though, (white doodle) as her coat is so thick. Maybe after this next grooming I will try as I am having her cut down very short.

My daughters white doodle has very very dark skin so it's unlikely we'd ever see any on him as well. Have to ask her though.

Over the past year or so, I have definitely noticed what Wally's vet says are age spots. They are not limited to his back, though. This started between the ages of eight and nine, and more have appeared as he gets older :o(  She has told us to ignore them, as they are flat and harmless. Wally did have one raised, darkly pigmented spot on his leg, that we had removed by a dermatologist, as it looked suspicious. Thankfully, it too was benign.

Interesting. I was suspecting age spots, or even sun damage. THese are all flat and although vary in darkness, do seem harmless. But I will ask. Glad Wally's was benign.

I am blue-eyed and fair skinned and have had more skin biopsies and spots frozen than I can count after being a baby oiled teen at the beach in Florida when I was stupid and reckless. So that has made me a little more aware of any changes in skin pigment.
