Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
We got Ollie about a week ago, and he seems to be shedding already, He's a F1B accor
is just some puppy shedding because I have asthma, which is why I was in search of a "hypoallergenic breed" This is my first time with a doodle, so other than the research I did before purchasing the puppy I'm kinda flying blind as far as what kind of coat he has. I was hoping someone here might be able to help me determine his coat type if I post a few pictures. He's super cute and smart, and a little ornery, and he even seems to be catching on to the potty training thing

Anytime there is a lab or golden retriever, or any other shedding dog thrown into the mix there is always the possibility they will shed. The doodle isn't considered hypoallergenic for this reason. Some may shed less than others or not at all, but no guarantee. If you wanted a 100% non shedder there are plenty of dogs out there that don't. Whether a purebred non shedder like a poodle, or a mix of 2 non shedders. He is a cutie, but if he is shedding already, that is not a good sign.
I agree with Amy ... way too many "so called" breeders out there claiming that their doodles are non shedding. You really cannot guarantee it. Some of the better breeders know their dogs well enough to give you a best chance, but still no guarantees. Your F1B has a better chance than an F1, but still not guaranteed. Shedding already isn't a good sign. Your best best would be to go with a Standard Poodle and just have it groomed like a doodle. Most people can't tell the difference.
Thanks for your replies, Yes the breeder said he would have soft wavy coat. His dad is a beautiful white poodle and mama looks to be more of a fleece coat type doodle. He's definitely shedding I have little white hairs all over my pants as we speak, I've been brushing him to see if that would help but it doesn't seem to be. My daughter is in love with him, so if I can't keep him because of breathing issues she will take him as soon as she gets a new apartment. I was hoping that someone could help identify his coat from the pictures, but I know it's hard to tell. I did ask the breeder about the shedding and she said it was his puppy coat, and she sent me picture of a previous pup that looks like him. The picture was the pup at 9 weeks, and then again at 10 months old and the pup eventually did have a wavy coat. I researched the breeder and she's been doing doodles for 15 years, so I'm hoping she is correct. Thanks again for all of your input.
Also, I'm not sure if I actually attached the pictures correctly, can you see them?
I also agree with Amy, and I would add that your pup's coat, while very fluffy, looks very straight to me; most F1Bs who do not shed have wavier/curlier coats, even at this age.
Mspeach, I have an f1b also and she has never shed, she mats, not sheds. Even during her coat change, she doesn't shed. She has a curly coat. I agree that your puppy's coat looks on the straighter side. My 2cents is you have a shedder and that will probably not change. But I am no expert, just my experience with my non shedder.
I think your doodle is going to be adorable, but I also think you are going to have issues with your allergies. If your daughter takes her for you, you might want to look into poodles, wheatens, schnauzers for yourself.
He is such a cutie. I hope you are not allergic to him. My daughter is allergic to her cat, but the cat is now 15 and she just could not bring herself to ever rehome her. LOL
Thanks, he really is super cute, his coat is hard to tell right now, his undercoat seems a little wooly, not curly, almost frizzy, and he is fuzzy all over, but his legs are pretty straight, I guess time will tell. It is disappointing that he's shedding so much, I've had to take my inhaler twice a day since I got him and have lost my voice :(
I've had little dogs for the last 15 years, Max who was a peek-a-poo, he passed away about 1.5 years ago, and Gracie who was my little porkie yorkie, she passed away a few months ago, I still have my 12 year old yorkie, Bella, she's very timid, and is not amused at all with Ollie. I've never had an issue with allergies or breathing before, so it's kind of a bummer. I probably can deal with a little shedding, but if he sheds like a lab I think for sure I'll be in trouble. Thanks again for the feedback. It's fun to look at and hear about everyone's furbabies.
Do you know that it is the shedding that causes your asthma? Many people are allergic to proteins in a dog's saliva and the shed issue is not the problem. I recently sold a pup that sheds to a woman who has an allergic grandson--he was FINE with the pup--but her other grandson was not--since the first one is the one that lives in her house, she was OK with that--but you never know what causes an allergy issue.
I wish you had done a bit more homework--hypoallergenic is a myth! But any breeder who knew of your allergy issues should have insisted on a CURLY pup, as I do when placing pups--we have had great results.
I don't know for sure, I'm just assuming since I've never had a shedding dog before and been okay, I've just been having issues since he came home. You are correct, I should have done more research, I thought I had done enough, but clearly there was a lot I didn't know. I did tell the breeder that I had issues, and she assured me that he would end up curly. I think it will be okay, my daughter is going to take him as soon as she can, and I will just deal with it until then.
