This makes me so sad and really scares me--I also live in a rural area not far from this poor woman and never lock my doors--robberies, especially in broad daylight and involving guns, are unheard of--but things are changing everywhere--due to the increase in heroin addiction for the most part--and maybe it is time to start thinking about security. These poor dogs never had a chance.

This is horrifying. Ginny, please update us if they catch the person who did it.
I certainly will--the story has gotten a lot of attention here where crime is so rare--and animal lovers abound!
This story makes me so sad. I just don't understand people.
Just horrible!!! Ginny, this story has reignited my worst fears. I live on 10 acres and my neighbors are on 5 and 10 acre lots, so no close neighbors. Although the road is busy, my home is screened from the road. I've lived here for years and never locked my doors until recently. Ironically, the house was locked when someone broke in a year ago. Thank God, I was gone and had Finnegan with me. I didn't even realize at first that my home had been broken into until I saw the front door ajar and saw the lock had been pried out. Then I went upstairs (not the wisest thing to do) but I was in denial until I saw all the bedroom doors, closets and drawers opened. They were only after gold jewelry which they found and took but I thank God every day that Finn wasn't here. They caught the guy a few weeks later. He had been robbing rural type homes from Massachusetts to PA. I installed all new locks and now I'm going to get a security system and more locks- but I keep thinking about this tragic story and how devastated these poor people must be. I hope they catch the bastard(s) who did this. My friend who is a retired detective tells me the best deterrent is not a security system but a dog and a Beware of Dog sign, but I'm serious about moving now. Please update us and be safe.
The story is horrific. I really hope justice prevails. Sadly laws for hurting or killing animals aren't very tough.
Update on the news tonight--one of our local legislators is introducing the Quigley and Kinsley law--named after the two poor dogs--$5000 fine and 2 additional years in jail if a domestic animal is hurt or killed when committing a crime. This story has touched the hearts of the people in our area--on the local news every night--no one caught yet--they are probably not local and are very far away by now.
I hope this passes, but there is already special place in hell for these people.
We had a break in several years ago and all I could think was "thank god they didn't hurt the dogs"!
We actually suspect it was either someone who knew the dogs or was just good with dogs, as they were clearly in our home for a long time. They dumped a container of pretzels on the floor for the dogs and I think fed them stuff from the fridge.
Maybe this was reverse good karma, as they were never caught... but I don't care since my pups were safe.
This still has me feeling upset for this poor family and it's so good to hear the legislators are investing their time and money into making it a law to deter harm to pets in a burglary. I'm sure when bad people are robbing others, the law is not in the forefront of their minds, as they probably don't think of getting caught. However, this may deter them enough to just stop and think about not hurting an animal.
It would be so simple to just throw some food around like they did at Marie's robbery as I think most of our doodles would likely just bark and probably even want to play with the intruders. Offer mine food or a ball and they are your friends forever.
This is the worse case scenario to have in a burglary, others are that they would take them too, knowing how valuable they are or just leaving the door open for them to run out and away. Somehow that might even be worse to me, thinking what would possibly be happening to them and if they were ok. Either way this is just so sad. I hope they find these thugs.
