I didn't know what group to post this in since it could be food or medical related.
Annabelle has been on Orijen since I weaned her off the breeders food. She was on the puppy formula until she was 8 months old. She was not a big eater then, not by a long shot. Once I switched to the adult formula she gobbled it up. I switch off between the regular and the 6 Fish. She loves both. No problem with her appetite. I think she would eat all day if I let her. Well now she is not eating any of her food. I first noticed with the yogurt and blueberries the other day. She turned her nose up and wouldn't eat it. She absolutely loves her yogurt and berries. That is so not like her to not chow it down. I did think it was odd, but wasn't worried. Yesterday morning I gave her Orijen for breakfast in the same bowl and spot I always do and she turned her nose up and wouldn't eat. She did eat dinner, not with her usual enthusiasm, but she did eat it all. My husband went against my wishes and gave her some plain chicken afterwards while we were eating dinner, which she did gobble up. Then this morning she won't eat the Orijen again. I don't know if it is:
1) Boredom with her food and I should try a different formula. I was trying to stay away from red meat formula, but maybe that is not a good thing.
2) My husband has created a monster by feeding her table food on occasion, ok maybe more than on occasion. That she has now become picky.
3) She is sick. She does act normal and her poop is normal. It is just her not eating that has me worried, because it is so not like her not to eat.

I told my husband not to feed her anymore table food, to which he has agreed. I am not giving her access to food again until her dinner tonight.

So what are your thoughts on this. Bored, Picky Monster or Sick? I will call her vet tomorrow, especially if she turns her nose up and dinner and tomorrows breakfast. Thanks

It surprises me. I could have said the same thing about Annabelle last week.

Both of my dogs, Oliver 5 and Ivy 1 will every once in awhile refuse to eat.  Ironically, it happened this morning.  It is not always both of them but today neither one will eat their breakfast.  I personally do not get worried because they have both done it many times before.  99 percent of the time, if they don't eat breakfast, they end up eating their dinner.  I don't leave the food down, I offer it a couple of times in the morning and then not again until dinner time.  I will give them their usual treats which are small and they only get a couple a day (which they never refuse by the way).  They NEVER get table food, but I do top their food with either boiled chicken or Primal Freeze Dried Nuggets.  I feed them Acana Ranchlands and I don't switch flavors.  Good luck :)

I agree with Jane. My only other suggestion would be to add a small bag of the Regional Red formula to the rotation and see if that stimulates her appetite.

I had her on just the regular Orijen, but added the 6 Fish to the rotation because she seemed to scratch herself a lot last summer. It helped, so I kept it. I will try the Regional Red and see if that helps any. Thanks for all the suggestions.

This would be concerning in my house for sure. My two are very food motivated and in their 7 and 6 yrs neither have refused any meal.  I would do exactly what you are doing though, being watchful.  As long as everything else is normal and it doesn't go on too long, that is.  I'll be watching to see what turns her around and if it really is an attitude problem, then you will know to expect it again probably and how to respond.  Hard to know for sure right now tho. Keep us posted and good luck.

I (actually Finn) seems to be the odd man out here, but from time to time he'll miss a meal or not eat for a day.  Nothing will tempt him. I've linked it to he may not have had enough exercise or he's just bored. As long as he's drinking water and acting fine, we no longer worry.  By the next morning, he's usually hungry and gobbles up his breakfast. If not, it's off to the vet.  Sometimes it's a bout of nausea that puts him off his food and the vet will give him a mild prescription.  I've found it best to keep him on 1-2 Acana regionals with a small topper of chicken or ground beef to avoid stomach upsets and feed him on schedule.  Good luck.  Hope it's nothing serious.

Prior to Jack's IBD, he also sometimes skipped a meal, and it was really no big deal. I continued to stick to his regular food and his regular schedule. He was never a food oriented dog.

More than one meal did tell me that something was wrong, though. And refusing treats was really a red flag. So part of it is knowing your dog.

If Annabelle had done this a year ago, I wouldn't have been concerned. She was a very light eater and wasn't food motivated in the least, no matter what it was. But once she hit 8 months old, everything changed. It's almost like she wasn't the same dog. She will be 2 in August. Since then she has loved food and has been very food motivated. She even loves her dog food. She never misses a meal, and would probably eat all day long if I let her. This is so unlike her. The fact that this is out of character for her, makes me wonder if it is more than her just being a stinker.

I think it's always best to consult your vet when there's a change like that. Finn has always been a picky eater.  If his stools are good, he's not vomiting (which he almost never does), there's no temperature and he's not acting sick -- I know he's just not hungry. It's a Finney Fast.  If it goes on past 24 hours though, I call the doc. BUT if Finn was a big and regular eater and he stopped, I'd be concerned. Better to be cautious and have her checked.

I agree, which is why I was a little miffed the vet didn't think it was necessary to see her at this point. I am supposed to call again tomorrow after breakfast for an update in her eating, so if tonight and tomorrow morning is pretty much the same, he may want to see her.

Just wondering how she did with dinner last night and breakfast this morning....hopefully better.

Snubbed dinner and took a few bites of breakfast. Will be taking her in today. She tried to poop this morning and there was nothing there.
