Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

We have a one year old F1B female goldendoodle.  We are seriously considering adding a second doodle.  We had planned to add another female.  One of the breeders we contacted asked us to consider a male as she said her experience is that a male/female combo is more successful than two females.  Do any of the two doodle households have any input into this discussion?  My feeling is probably that it is more about any two individual dogs instead of overall gender but she has a lot of experience and I do not want to discount it.  Appreciate any insights.  We have never been a two dog home before.

I think it is basically just her opinion.   I personally wouldn't let it influence my decision.

I have heard that to, but I know several households that have 2 females and they get along great.

I've heard the same thing as well, but I have two females and we've never had a problem.  My girls get along great and have always interacted really well (even though the younger one is the more "pushy" one lol).  I agree it probably has more to do with the individual dogs.

I have heard the same thing and think it has merit.  On the other side we ended up with two females.  My F1 is very laid back and let the younger one, F1b, take over as the boss.  They play hard together, but they play fair.  The differences show up with the toys, the younger gets anything she wants. If my older one wants it she tries offering another toy, sometimes it works, sometimes not so well.  Pushy younger one, laid back older one (they are 14 months apart), but they are the BEST of friends and frequently tangle together for naps.

I have two girls.  We had Skadi since 3 months old, she is 5 now.  We took Elli in January of 2015.  She is 7 now.  They had 2 fights the first week they were together.  That was the end of their fighting.  They play together.  They do not snuggle with each other or seek each other's company. But, then again it may be different if we had raised Elli as a new puppy into the pack. I have never had two dogs til now.  They respect each other.  I have always been partial to girls but I have heard the same everyone else is saying that one of each get along better.  Good luck with whatever your choice ends up being.

I have three girls, my daughter has a female Golden retriever and we have had a rescue Doodle at my house for the past month and she is also a female. No problems at all among any of them!

I have heard this as well and have no experience with two females, but I would guess it has a lot to do with the individual dogs and the training and environment they experience in the home. It just seems to me once they are neutered, what would stir and female/female issues?

Thanks for the advice everyone!  We decided to go with our gut.  Our current doodle is so laid back we just think she will do fine with a new little lady in the house.  They will be almost exactly a year apart in age.  We adopted a new doodle today and bring her home in June.

Congratulations! I also think that being so young, they will get along fine and have a lot of puppy playtime.

Congratulations on your decision.  Enjoy your new pup when you get her.

I think you will have a great "pack"
