Ok, so ever since Kai was a couple months old, she tends to do this thing with the water bowl:

When Kai was a couple weeks old, she drank water normally, but now that she's a tad bit older she drinks water like it's the last thing she's ever going to drink. We take her to my parents house to play with the other dogs in which they have a much bigger water bowl.. When she see's it, Kai will run towards it, and dunks her entire body. SO, we figured maybe she just really loves the water, so they bought her one of those kiddie pools from Walmart so she can get wet in (and she does).

BUT..She still has the tendency (if she goes to drink water),  dips 70% of her head obnoxiously to drink, and ends up getting the whole floor wet.

Is this a puppy behavior thing or just her personality? I don’t mind it, but having to pull out the mop every time she wants water is getting a bit crazy, lol.

2 Months: (still does the same thing at 4mo)

I think it's probably both puppy behavior and her personality! :-)  They are water lovers! When Winnie was little she used to dunk her whole head into the water bowl- up to her eyes and sometimes including her eyes- on a hot summer day. She doesn't do that so much any more but she does love her kiddie pool!

If I put ice cubes in Ludo's water, he'll submerge his whole nose, but I've never had him stick his whole face in his water bowl before. One other thing you may want to think about (especially as she gets a bit older) is getting her good and dry after she gets in the pool/ her whole face wet.  I have not been so diligent about this with Ludo and he mats around his face like crazy, but he's 10 months old and going through the coat change.  Might just be a good habit to get into.  She is adorable, by the way.

Thankyou Kaitlin and Ludo!

Is that when their coat changes? I was actually wondering about that as well. Her coat is extremely soft right now and was hoping it stayed like that forever!

I think it depends on the dog.  Usually like 8 months to 1 year-ish is when they change, I think.  You'll definitely be able to tell when it starts.  Lu's coat is still REALLY soft, but it used to NEVER mat and suddenly it's like he'll mat just LOOKING at water.  I'm very ready for the "change" to be over.  haha.

Hurley is 4 now.  He has been into water (literally and figuratively) since day one.   He is the sloppiest drinker I have ever had and had to be trained to not go in the little pond in our back yard or the kid's grownup swimming pool without permission.

I get a chuckle out of watching him submerge like a sub marine in the pond (it is not very deep).   We used the kid's plastic pools a couple of summers but he would dig holes in them when playing in the water so by the third summer we didn't buy one and just give him permission to go in the pond when he is hot or when he signals that is what he would like to do.  When we go to the kid's he was like a speeding bullet to get in the pool before I could get 'no' out of my mouth.  Now he goes to the pool side or comes to me with that "I really need to get in that pool' look.  He doesn't care if it is a 100 degrees out or 30 degrees out.    lol

I keep a towel by his water bowl so I can wipe up after every time he drinks.  The other two doodles, that are his buddies and come over for doggie play days or for extended stays, are not as sloppy with their drinking.    Go figure.

Kai is sure cute!!!

Glad Kai is not the only one!

Thank you for your response! I will have to buy her a water/food mat of some sort!

Watson definitely did this when he was really young.  At the time, even if the water bowl was smaller than him, he would play and use his paws and essentially dig and splash out all his water.  Or if we went to a friend's house where the water bowl was a little bigger, it wasn't uncommon to see his face and maybe a couple paws in at the same time.

He's grown out of it since and is otherwise a clean drinker.  Instead, now he loves going swimming!

Exactly! Hopefully she grows out of it! It's kind of cute, and very hard to scold her when it happens.

I just saw a video of a Husky that sticks her nose in her water dish and blows bubbles. It was pretty funny.

My girl doesn't like her face in water. She loves to drink out of the garden hose when it is hanging over the fence.

Such a princess :D

That is awesome. I think I saw the same video and instantly thought of kai, lol

We had to resort to a travel water bowl - the buddy bowl, to keep the guys from dancing in the bowl.  I just ordered new ones from Ray Allen Manufacturing at half price.

This is very helpful! I will have to check it out! Especially for travel purposes! Thank you Nancy, Ned & Clancy!!
