Hi, Bella and Murphy are counter surfers to the Nth degree. And we are vigilant about what we leave out 99.9% of the time. This morning I left a crystal butter dish on the counter, with about 3 tbls of butter on it, uncovered. Totally forgot to put the lid on. My bad. Came home to glass everywhere on the floor, blood drips all around it and the butter gone. After checking tongues, jaws, gums, noses, paws and every other inch of them, other than some blood on Murphy's snout,I can not find the source of the blood and no one is actively bleeding.
I called the Vet right away, who suggested X-rays might show the glass or might not, but to give bread and food and watch for diarrhea, vomiting, further signs of bleeding and possible pancreatitis. It wasn't as much butter as they have eaten before, but I see how that could happen as well.
ANyone ever have THIS happen and what was your outcome? All this and we are leaving in 48 hours for a week at the beach in California and leaving them with a friend. Or not. Will keep you updated.

Thanks, yes they are definitely getting enough rewards by countersurfing to keep making them do it. We have tried the pans on the edge of the counter, the can with pennies in it to shake when they go near counter, (now they don't go near them if we are home so that backfired), I've used Hot Hot sauce on foods to tempt them to stay away, cayenne pepper so they would sniff it before getting too far and I once resorted to mouse traps!!!!!
They knocked off the traps and ate the food!!! I've watched them on camera and did the "uh-uh" into the speaker and they would move away quickly, but I was usually at work and couldn't watch all day, so that didn't work.
So there has to be another way and I am on a mission to find it now!!!
Perseverant pair of purloiners!
LOL Bonnie!
Oh my gosh, Sue, you've tried it all! How about making a looping tape with your voice saying "uh-uh" and play it all day in the kitchen when you're gone! ! LOL JK :) Well, I hope you can find a trainer that is smarter then two doodles! Are they like Fudge and Vern where one is the leader and the other the follower? Maybe you would only have to train the ONE.
:)
Gosh Ricki, I really don't know which one is the instigator. They both seem pretty food motivated so I suspect they both try to beat each other to the counter. I picture a scene like this,
Bella: "Im sure she's gone Murph, you go scan the kitchen and I'll stand guard at the door."
Murphy: "Hey Bella, I see she left the butter out...come quick"
Bella: " good job Murph, your reach is longer, go pull it to the edge"
Murphy and Bella: "Yum, Yum Butter, Oops, darn we dropped it."
Is there a way to gate them out of the kitchen when you aren't home?
It's a pretty open concept and it would take a few large gates. I've resisted that option so far and have been keeping counters clean, but again, I will forget at times
.
Tigger ate a package of razor blades when we were gone and my daughter was watching him. The bread (two loaves) did the trick. No bad conseqeunces.
Probably if any glass shards went down with the butter, they two will pass with the bread without incident.
Keeping my fingers crossed and thinking kind thoughts.
Wow, that would be scary. It seems the bread helped and so far they are fine. I will just continue to be watchful but I think they are ok.
I know this sounds pretty elaborate but what about a laser system. Maybe an alarm would scare them.
