Hi, Bella and Murphy are counter surfers to the Nth degree. And we are vigilant about what we leave out 99.9% of the time. This morning I left a crystal butter dish on the counter, with about 3 tbls of butter on it, uncovered. Totally forgot to put the lid on. My bad. Came home to glass everywhere on the floor, blood drips all around it and the butter gone. After checking tongues, jaws, gums, noses, paws and every other inch of them, other than some blood on Murphy's snout,I can not find the source of the blood and no one is actively bleeding.
I called the Vet right away, who suggested X-rays might show the glass or might not, but to give bread and food and watch for diarrhea, vomiting, further signs of bleeding and possible pancreatitis. It wasn't as much butter as they have eaten before, but I see how that could happen as well.
ANyone ever have THIS happen and what was your outcome? All this and we are leaving in 48 hours for a week at the beach in California and leaving them with a friend. Or not. Will keep you updated.

I had a similar thought. Some kind of motion detector with an alarm. Something like this one. And I see in the questions that someone else was looking for one to keep their dogs off the counter! This one doesn't appear to be of very good quality but it gives you the idea.

Something like this would probably work. The trainer is coming monday and we will see what we can do with him but we just might need this for the long term because we can train them to stay off, but one good snack when we forget something and we are back to square on. Thanks DonMarie Too.
I'm so sorry to hear this, and glad to hear they're both doing fine. Sending good thoughts that any glass passes through without problem.
Hopefully the trainer will have a clever solution - I'm at a loss for ideas with my counter-surfer Beasley. I feel your pain because she never does it in front of me - and you're so right, that one time you may forget is the time when something crazy can happen. Especially when I've lived my whole life not having to think about it, and now any time in the kitchen I also have to be thinking "Beasley. Counters." ...and sometimes it's hard just to remember WHY I'm in the kitchen, lol!
Well I will share any ideas, especially if they work.
Hope you find something good. Will be watching for it. Tigger is a relentless counter surfer. I have had seven dogs and only Tigger has been so difficult - the reward is worth it for him, I guess.
So 11 days away from the glass scare. They survived the week without us, they were in very good hands. We had a trainer come to the house today and we are working on booby traps, commands and more boundaries. What was nice is he said we had them about 90% trained already, it's just fine tuning it to be consistent and making it a negative experience when they go to the counters. And taking us out of the equation so they don't figure out that it's ok to go to the counter when we leave.
He was "very impressed" by their door bell manners and sitting while opening the door and only greeting when told they could. It was all good to hear, because my dogs have never been formally trained nor have they ever even been to an obedience class. So they have never been critiqued by anyone in the know. Most of what I've learned to teach them has all been through DoodleKisses. Says a lot for our community and the education that is here. Thanks to everyone who has ever posted a training tip, because I have been watching and learning from everyone.
I am so glad you were able to leave them for your trip and all was well. Congratulations for the great training you've done!
Thanks Bonnie, there is tons of room for improvement but training is a lifelong job.
