My doodle, 7 will be neutered at 8 months. His vet said that for his size, it is better to have him neutered at 1 year old.  I would have agreed with that  but my neighbour's dog isn't spayed and I am scared that there might be an accident since she would come to play with him. Anyway, my real concern is, 7's sister (Luna) got spayed recently and she had a reaction the drug, DEXOMITOR. Her heart stopped and she stopped breathing on the operation table but the vet was able to bring her back. So, she might have had an allergic reaction? Since they are siblings, I am scared that 7 might have the same reaction. I told the vet to put it on his chart so that they would know that his sister had a reaction to this drug.  Still hoping, nothing like that will happen to my 7.

I understand your concern, I would be worried to. You have let your vet know about his sisters experience. But I would also want to know what other precautions they are going to take to make sure 7 comes through with flying colors. Good Luck, I know it is a worry.

I would also worry, just discuss your concerns and the procedure with your vet ahead of time and let them how you are feeling. I hope everything goes well for you and 7.

Dexomitor is a brand of dexmedetomidine, which is also used for people under the brand name Precedex.  Its a sedative and analgesic Wikipedia says rapid IV administration can cause bradycardia (slow heart rate), but there is a lot of variability between different people/animals.

Most adverse reactions to medications are NOT hereditary, or, to be precise, not hereditary as far as we know. For example, if your mother had an anaphylactic reaction to penicillin, that does not mean that you will have the same thing.  However, there are some genetic factors that can influence the  absorption, metabolism , and/or elimination of a drug, so a person might require a larger or smaller dose, or might produce some unwanted metabolite.  The vet should be closely watching the reaction of your dog to the sedatives they give him.

When I had my female puppy spayed in July, they showed me the entire list of meds they would be giving her before the procedure.  I would tell the vet about this, and they can avoid using it, just for your peace of mind.

The spay procedure is more invasive for females than for males, and my puppy was definitely zonked out when I picked her up. But she was much better the next day, and almost back to normal the day after that.

We all hope that all goes well for you and 7.

No big deal at all, but I am glad you waiting until he was a little older for his bones to develop.  You are right to be concerned about the anesthesia.  My dog had a severe reaction to anesthesia when he had a surgery (fatty tumor removal) and I said to go ahead and clean his teeth since he was already under.  They gave him more (another anesthesia) and he broke out in terrible hives.  It was more to clear up the hives than it was for the initial surgery.  Talk with them about the anesthesia.  For a neutering, it is just snip, snip, and done.

Just to add--neutering is a very easy surgery and takes very little time compared to a spay--if he is under anesthesia, it won't be for long--not invasive at all--he will be OK!

Wishing little 7 an uneventful surgery and I agree with Ginny that it will be much less of a procedure then his sister's.  Let us know how things go!

That being said, I was worried about Tara's spay surgery too so I know what you're feeling! Hang in there doodle mom!!!

The day of surgery I would again express my concerns to the vet so it is fresh in his/her mind going into surgery.  Hang in there!  I bet it will go as planned and your next post will be - "how do I get my neutered boy to stay calm for the next few days!"  LOL

Hope all goes well and please keep us posted!
