Kai woke us up with a really weird noise in the middle of the night.. When we got up to see what was going on, she was wagging her tail but making hyperventilating sounds.
This was so scary, but she seemed her normal, happy self. I calmed her down and took her out to go to the restroom and she stopped after about 5-10min.
I immediately look up the symptoms up online and found that it's called a reverse sneeze. TheBark.com mentioned it is:
"An irritation of the soft palate and throat that results in a spasm. The dogs neck will stretch outward and the chest will expand during the spasm as it tries harder to inhale".
Causes can be excitement, eating/drinking,exercise intolerance, leach pulling, household substances such as perfumes, pollen and allergies.
I was wondering if anyone has experienced this with their doodle and if it happens often?
Here is a LINK to the full article and a example video of another dog making similar noises.

I've never heard reverse sneezing that sounds like honking. Hyperventilating, yes, wheezing and snorting, but not "honking". Honking can be a sign of kennel cough (bordatella), so I'd keep an eye on this and see if the vet if it happens again in the next day or so. .
I copied the same title from TheBark.com, but thank you- I am setting up a exam for her next week just in case!
My Jackapoo does this occasionally, but I thought it was from my ALD grabbing him by the collar in an effort to play wrestle. They do that all the time and I wasn't too alarmed. Sounds like your dog wants to be a goose.
I agree that the honking description sounds like kennel cough--if she has been around other dogs or kenneled and has not had a bordatella vaccine, that could be it.
Dogs can still get bordatella even when they've been vaccinated, just like people can still get the flu even if they've had a flu shot. There are different strains, and the vaccines can't cover all of them. It's usually a milder case, but you should still have the vet check it out if it continues.
Unfortunately, the bordetella vaccine isn't 100% effective to prevent kennel cough. Both my doodles had their vaccines current when they came down with it (Lucy twice, Oscar once).
My Guinness does reverse sneeze...and it does sound like hyperventillating. With kennel cough it's a different sound...more like he's got something caught in his throat and he's forcefully coughing which does sound a little like "honking". The big difference with Guinness is when it's a reverse sneeze, it is occasional and it will go away...he only does it because he has an irritation in his throat. With kennel cough it is way more persistent, and happens several times over a period of hours.
