I had looked into this kennel once for a family get-away. We ended up getting a place that allowed dogs. I can't imagine the heartbreak of these dog owners.

Horrible.
This was also a breeding kennel, as is often the case with kennel type boarding facilities in rural areas. They bred Labs.

I am fortunate in that I have never had to board a dog. I can't imagine losing one this way.
I think the best option is to have someone you know and trust stay in your home, or leave your dog in the home of someone you know & trust. A friend or relative.
I'm also always amazed by how many of the posts on FB concerning lost dogs involve the dog having been left with a groomer or pet sitter.
I know people think I'm over the top overprotective of my girls, but I have two friends who lost their dogs with pet sitters. One took the dog out running when it was in the 90s and the dog died of a heat stroke. The other had the dog run away in a thunderstorm and they found him dead in a field. I can't even imagine the guilt and sorrow of leaving a healthy dog for a few days and coming home without them. I take every precaution to keep them safe. No matter how much people have good intentions they will never love them and protect them the way I do.
The only time I've been away from Katie when she was 8 weeks old was this fall when I went on a 4 day trip and my parents came to the house and watched her. I was stressed about it the whole time. I know not everyone can live the way I do, but I'm pretty well decided that the dogs go, or I will stay home. I enjoy their company. It's not really any fun to go anywhere without them anyway.
Sadly, an awful lot of the missing dogs on FB were with people who did take their dogs with them on trips, and included the dogs in all of their activities, including fireworks displays. :(
Sometimes, dogs are better off at home.
It would have never occurred to me that fireworks were a good place to leave a dog. I agree that they would be better off at home in those situations. I agree that if you're going to take them you have to make arrangements to keep them safe there too.
And every July 5th, FB is filled with the missing dog posts. When will people learn???
How horrible! And even worse if the family had left more than one dog in their care. I think I might be permanently devastated if this happened to me. I just cant think about the unimaginable grief! Thankfully my girls will never have to be boarded.
It would have been tough to be the owners of the boarding kennel and having to make those phone calls to their clients. It has really bothered me all day. Those poor dogs being trapped like that, and dying such a horrible, terrifying death. Hopefully the smoke put them to sleep and they didn't feel much pain.
I am SO LUCKY to have found a young-ish friend (29) who will stay in my home with my three doodles---I have known him for over a decade and he works locally--I went away for a few weekends to give him some experience with my dogs and we just returned from a five day trip--working up to a big two week adventure in Alaska in May--I pay him well and leave the cash when for him when he arrives so that he knows he has to earn it now! It has worked out very well...crossing my paws that he will stay local for a long time!!
This is such a sad story and there was another one recently where the older woman who ran the kennel went back in to save dogs and lost her life.
